Japan Rail Network Student My Friend Is Going for 1 Year

I am going to Japan for 2 week and my friend is student going for 1 year. we are try to work out how to travel cheep on Train network. Any ideas? A she cannot get JR pass.

    If you and your friend are doing a lot of travelling in a space of a week or two, you could get a JR rail pass and your friend can get a Seishun 18 Kippu.
