Cheap international parcel delivery? [DISCUSSION]

I am in the process of sending something overseas which is <2kg. Checked Aus post to view their prices and it's $50 as the cheapest option to send 2kg!!!! Rip off prices!

So are there any cheaper alternatives for sending small packages overseas? I've read a little about sites like e-go, packsend and skippy post, but the post was from a few years ago.

Anyone know any reliable yet budget friendly courier services that are currently in the market?

I'm sure others might appreciate this post too.

Thank you :)

Ps: if it makes a difference, the package is going to Malaysia.

Check your Asian grocery places, some of them actually have deals with parcel companies so they allow you to send stuff cheaper.

At least in Canberra, I was able to send 140ish KG parcels for around $300 like that to Korea (It's from 3 years so I am not certain, but it was around that I think).

Yeah, OzPost is a massive rip re the cost of sending parcels; both domestic and international. It's bizarro that someone in HK can evidently send something here almost for free (hence all the really cheap stuff on ebay with free postage), but for me to send sommat of the same weight/dimensions back to HK via OzPost costs a lot. And I won't even start on domestic parcel-post charges. Did OzPost lose their main revenue source back in the late 1990s when email/online written communication pretty much completely replaced "written" letters, and decide the only option that would negate a commensurate down-sizing was to gouge peeps who send parcels?

Maybe. Does anyone know how the cost of sending a parcel over the last three decades compares to the rate of inflation over that same time-period? The OP has designated this a 'Discussion', so I'm assuming I have some license to ask a somewhat abstract question/ crap on a bit here…

Anyways, I reckon probably the only way you could send it substantially cheaper would be to team up with a few peeps who want to send stuff to Malaysia, and send a bigger 'group package' sea-mail, and split the costs. It's probably not very practical advice, unless you're an international student/ know others wanting to send stuff back to Malaysia, and there's no rush to get it there. I didn't know about the Asian grocery thingy mentioned above… might look into it myself. Maybe they group things going to the same country together/achieve a substantially lower rate like that?

  • And they raise prices again as of tomorrow…..
