Paying for Laser Hair Removal Vs Buying Your Own Machine

I'm considering purchasing my own laser hair removal machine as prices seem to be pretty expensive to get it done at salons/clincs. Does anyone know much about ongoing costs, maintenance, etc for purchasing your own machine?

I'm currently getting IPL treatment done on my stomach, shoulders and back costing $300 for each visit. I've been told i need between 6 and 10 visits and then maybe yearly visits after that, or whenever it's necessary.

Basically that's about $3000 for treatment that isn't even guaranteed. So it got me thinking, what if i purchased something like this off eBay? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FAST-SHIPPING-IPL-Laser-Hair-Remo… for $2650. It's just one example of quite a few different machines available.

At the end of the treatment, at least i'll have a machine i can sell. I'm thinking most of these places probably don't even service their machines that regularly either. It's a pretty unregulated industry. I believe it's also a one or two day course to be "qualified".

Any suggestions and advice appreciated.

    • That is for adding hair, not removing it

      • haha yeah not quite the same.

  • Where are you paying $300? You should buy packages on specials.
Machines are for trained professionals and I think it is far too risky.

    • A lot of those groupon etc deals aren't that much cheaper when i read the fine print.

      • I bought lots directly from Laser Clinics Australia for other areas and it was $30ish/session.
I am Nordic looking so it didn't work on my hair unfortunately but my darker friends have had great results.

      • PS - In the interim, you can look at beauty schools and use the salon services there as the students are trained but need experience so the prices are cheaper.

  • I did a bit of research on this. Apparently the phillips DIY machines are really good from Shaver Shop and they have a 90 day money back guarantee. Worth a gamble and you can always return it it isn't up to your standards.

But they do tend to heat up quite a bit and your skin and hair colour must be light and dark respectively.

    • I have looked into that one actually. Just not sure if it would be suitable for my back and chest. Seems like such a small flash area, might take a long time, even having to charge it twice.

  • I bought my own IPL system from the Shaver Shop. I'm not very hairy but like to do my armpits. I never have to shave. I also have a daughter so it's better value to do it ourselves than to go to a salon.

    • I haven't used one of these before - does it hurt?

      • It doesn't hurt at all. Just a few zaps and that's it! Keeps me hair-free for months. I used to have to shave every 2-3 days and now I don't have to. No dark shadows either so it's perfect for Summer when I love going sleeveless. I only needed 6 treatments at first, and now I only do it when I need to. Roughly 10-15 zaps under each arm. You'll find the hair grows back softer and finer and then not at all after 6 treatments. It's worth it for me to spend $500 on the IPL system than to pay $70 each time I go to the salon.

        • Thanks so much for the info! Think I might have to treat myself to one of these… I wax (and use a Silk Epil in between). It's such a hassle, I'd love something permanent.

        • I think you will like the IPL System. At first, I was like - it really doesn't do anything. But after using it 6 times, it really works well. I also do it for my Mum and daughter now that she is in high school.

I also buy Nivea 24 hour deodorant spray and use it after I have zapped my armpits to cool it down right away. Just a tip.

Treat yourself. It will save you so much time! I do it after I shower and you can use a disposable razor before you start zapping. I give myself a treatment every 3 months or so now. Best thing ever.

        • You've sold me ;)
Which one do you have? Is it this:

        • This is the one I have:

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Philips-Lumea-Precision-SC2004-IP…

It was on Sale for $500 two years ago at the Shaver Shop.

          They have this one now:

          http://www.shavershop.com.au/online-store/ladies-hair-remova…

This one is dearer but it comes with a smaller facial attachment so you can do your face also.

I'm happy just to do my legs and underarms.

        • Thanks Cupcake! Do you know what the main difference is between these more expensive ones and the cheaper one in my link? They seem to be pretty much the same?

        • They do look like they do the same thing!

Well, I think the handle is easier to use? That is what they use at the salons when I first started going.

The one I've got has 5 settings also… Hmm, maybe because it's for 150,000 zaps at least.

I think the smaller one would also do the job to be honest. I got it because it was 50% off in the catalogue at the time.

        • Thanks heaps for the help :)

        • No problem :)
