Suface Pro 3 i3 Assistance

Okay OzB community.

My local Cash Converters has a 64 MB Surface Pro 3 i3 for 650.
RRP on the entry level surface is 979.
I really REALLY want an i5 for longevity but at this price I'm very tempted.

At the moment I have a very old Hp/Compaq Nw8440 workstation.
I mainly use the laptop for torrents, surfing the web and light computing tasks (i'm not a gamer anymore…clearly).
It does what it is supposed to do sometimes slowly but…it works.
Almost all of my files are on a WD Mycloud Nas and Onedrive.

Tell me Ozbarganers, should I pull the trigger on this?
Will an i3 give me slightly better performance over my Core II Duo?

Thanks in advance.

It would give quite a perfomance boost along with the ram and ssd. I think you should get it.

    64MB? Ah, the olden days.

I think it would be an upgrade, simply because your workstation is fairly old.
That being said, it's hard to compare ultrabook/tablet hybrids to a workstation because there are things like throttling, so I am not sure how well these benchmark scores are going to affect your usage when you use it for long time or do something that is resource intense.

  • The cpubenchmark…how could I forget about that site?
    Thanks you two!

Anyone have any experience with 'Crack-Head Converters'?
Can you negotiate on price or do they usually stick to their guns?

    Cheers!

  • 64GB is painfully small but at that price I would tolerate it, that's a good deal.

  • I'd imagine with 64gb (30 or so usable) this would be excruciating for those 'legal' ;) torrents.

I guess you could always get a USB HDD and then bluetooth mouse/KB.

  • 64gb will be fine, you can put in an SD card for storage of specific "Documentaries" etc and just let it live in the Surface. I think it takes Micro-SD's. Having owned a surface 2 myself for a few months I can say I loved it.
I only sold it as I bought it second hand (Almost new) and was offered $300 more than I bought it for as I was working remotely and someone else wanted it desperately as their laptop died.
The i3 does however have lower inbuilt graphics than the processors above it, but still better than the surface 2. The 3 also has a larger screen, as I was originally trying to get a 3, but they were fairly new and very expensive at the time.

  • …and I've just realised it's a 6 month old thread… I hope you bought it.

      Lol! No worries m8.

I let it go. Just last week, they had an i5 128GB Pro 3 WITH a type cover AND red external cover for a mere 999.

I let that pass too. Cuz the new models are going to drop in about 3 weeks and I suspect the IT needs (and crackheads) will be offloading the top of the range pro3s soon.
