Simple Laptop $300- $500

Hi all

Need a recommendation for a simple lapop for the missus in the range of $300-$500.

Usage is limited to mucking around on the internet and watching videos. Not a student - portability not a huge factor and a larger screen size (13-15 inch) preferred. No gaming. Light MS Office use.

Any thoughts? Thinking about hitting the Dell Factory Outlet but don't really know what I'm looking for.

Thanks all.

  • $300 dollars will get you a very basic laptop based on Atom N2830, probably between 2 to 4GB of RAM (but usually upgradable by the user), in NEW condition. Popular choices include the HP 250 G3. and the Kogan Atlas

They are slow but is generally OK if you just want to browse the web on.

For a bit more oomph in the processor department you can get for $359 (Dell Outlet) a REFURB DFO-2752626IP, it comes with a Core i3 and should be a decent choice.

If you can afford to, I would recommend a Dell Latitude 3340, the DFO-2911913LT for $529 as it is much sturdier than Inspiron notebooks and it also gets you a faster Core i5 CPU.

  • I have the HP 250 G3

It is very good for web browsing, light gaming: I can play Talisman Digital Edition, Torchlight, Torchlight II, Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition, etc. just fine.
Why pay top dollar if all you want is to browse the web?

  • Most laptops >$500 are about the same, it's only around $500 that you get into i3 processors.

Pick something with at least 4GB RAM and many are upgradable to 8GB.
Pentiums and Celerons are all you get down here, so look out for quad core versions of the CPU.
