Moving out for the first time. What to buy new/second hand?

I have been living in a furnished apartment, the only things I bought have been the furniture in my room. I will now need to buy a fridge, tv, washing machine, tv unit, table, chairs, sofa, coffee table. The apartment is not on the ground level, and access isn't great. I am worried that buying a brand new fridge and washing machine would mean that they would get damaged while being carried into the place, and considering that this is my temporary accommodation (I am planning on buying my own house later this year) and I will be moving again in the near future… is this the smartest thing to do?

I am financially stable, but just not sure as to where in my life I am right now, in terms of future, relationships etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Seconds World for whitegoods and Ikea for furniture. Quick too because our crappy dollar will send whitegood prices up. Don't spend big if your planning to move again within a year because your furniture may not be ideal for your new place.

I don't agree with seconds world, their prices are not that much cheaper then new. I'd try gumtree for most things except mattresses and maybe couch. You can get things for an absolute steal and just use your common sense when you buy it.

    • Sometimes you can get reasonable couches and actual beds on there for free, people just wanting to get rid of it and cant be bothered trasporting it. Athough they go pretty quick, just keep checking back there every couple days etc because there seems to be a bit.

  • I just gave away an old couch set, dining set, bbq, and a few other things on gum tree just recently simply because they were using space in my garage, and couldn't be arsed taking photos of them to try and make a sale. They were gone within 4 hours of being advertised.

I'd say to just get cheap stuff and buy something nice for the new house, as the unit size / style may be very different.

  • I wouldn't recommend buying a washing machine now if you are going to move into a house soon. I'd use a laundry, hand washing and dry cleaners in the meantime. if you're lucky you might be able to visit friends or family and do your washing there.

Washing machines must be purchased based on the exact size you have available. If you buy one now it might not fit into the laundry space in your new accomodation. I've heard lots of stories of people having to buy new washing machines when they moved becasue of space and fitting issues.

I'd buy some items new and some secondhand.

Gumtree and maybe ebay are the best for all the items you mentioned.
    Also, maybe a local newspaper.
My recommendation is to find somebody moving overseas who wants to shift a bunch of items on your list.
They will probably give you a discount if you buy more than one thing, it is easy to collect everything from one place, and you can be fairly sure their stuff is ok not worn out.

Gumtree the shit out of it.

I got the most reliable kelvinator for free because it was in a third storey apartment and they didnt want to get it down. $20 for ikea couches from gumtree too.

Also got a free washing machine, its only 4.5kg but it works.

  • Personally I found TVs to be pretty disappointing on Ebay/Gumtree, either it's someone trying to get more money than the tv is worth or they're all too small (why they're selling in the first place). All in all, the prices were close enough to brand new substitutes.
