Transfering Unis (UTS to Other) and Changing Career Path (Nursing to Paramedics)

i am currently studying a bachelor of nursing at UTS, standard 3 year course. i have completed 2 years and have just started my final year. i can confirm that a registered nurse is not the career pathway i wish to take. i have dropped 2 subjects and am now doing part time because i do not enjoy it, and i have to deal with job find now.

i have been looking for courses that interest me and 2 come up, paramedicine or vet science. i saw that UWS offers paramedicine at their campelltown campus and am interested in studying there.

does anybody know if i can get credit for the two years i have completed in nursing at uts and if i will be eligible to join uws despite not attaining the 93.80 ATAR required. (i got 75)

any advice will be helpful, as well as for courses related to vet science.

  • Nursing to paramedics seems to be leaping from the frying pan into the fire from what I've read of the disgraceful way ambos are being treated.

    • Can you elaborate? Are their working conditions poor and underpaid?

      • They are being assaulted while trying to save lives.

"Ambulance Victoria will not tolerate aggression or abuse towards paramedics from patients, families or bystanders.

Acting CEO Tony Walker said new figures showed there were 314 reports of assault and aggression – or almost one a day – towards paramedics in 2013-14."

Google paramedics or ambos + assaults and you'll find heaps all over Australia.

  • Are you 21 yet? If so, your ATAR no longer matters.

  • My sister in law is a senior paramedic.
She advises they are graduating more than can be employed. Your nursing study might help for extra experience, but be cautious. I gather that a lot of recent grads are stuck as patient transport officers (basically taxi drivers for the elderly) or just not employed as ambulance officers at all.

That said, it is a good job, with great satisfaction, good conditions etc.
I don't suppose you want to hear complete the last bit of your degree then move to do paramedics?

Sorry to be so grim: being an ambo is one of the most rewarding careers I can think of but best to know the facts.

  • Just curious, what is it about nursing that you don't like and what is it about being a paramedic that appeals to you?

  • Good luck getting a job in nursing. One of the most over supply professions. And once you do get a job, too much responsbility and too little pay.
