Why Exactly Lexus is Better Than Toyota? Is it the engine quality or merely interior?

I am researching about buying a new SUV, considering a Toyota Prado and Lexus RX 350.

It is normally said that Lexus has better quality built than Toyota hence the hefty price tag. I am having a little bit problem grasping the concept. When they say Lexus is better built, do they mean the quality of the built of the whole engine and suspension etc. is better? Or do they refer to the quality of the interior etc? Cause I don't really care that much about the quality of the interior.

Sorry for the noob question!

Cheers,

Bec

Quality of interior - better materials with more options and exterior - better paint, smaller gaps, more complex body parts are used with more curves, edges etc - they are more expensive to produce. Perhaps better insulation materials. The core is the same for mane but not all models.

However… It is nonsense to compare RX with Prado. Even if they where Made by BMW and Citroen:)

Buy the Prado, even just for the resale alone!

  • The Prado is already very costly, I can't imagine any improvements in the Lexus worth extra money. My Prado is coming up to 17 years old @ 300000km and still goes well. Just service to spec and it will go for a long time.

They cost more because the Lexus badges are carved with unicorn tears from kryptonite by Banshee's

  • Lexus tends to get newer, better technology (including engines) that slowly filters down the Toyota vehicle range.

  • When comparing "quality & durability" with Lexus and Prado… virtually no benefit from having the lexus badge.
Generally Lexus are more refined compared to the standard Toyota.

As already mentioned, the Toyota equivalent to the RX350 would be the Kluger Grande or KX-S versions.

If choosing between RX-350 and Prado.. Prado for sure, but petrol version.

    • Prado for sure, but petrol version.

Umm no. Worse fuel economy, far worse resale. No reason not to recommend a Toyota diesel

Prado diesel might not be suitable for city drive unless you drive to country oftenly due to the built these days.

  • The Lexus version of the Prado is the GX series, which isn't sold in Australia.

The RX series form Lexus is much more analogous to the Kluger…

As far as off-road capabilities go, the Prado is a better choice…the RX will also have less room on the inside.

The RX is a more placid drive though…the sound dampening is better, and it's a much quieter cabin.

  • The RX isn't meant to be taken off roads. You can't compare the two vehicles - it's like a sedan on stilts.

Sound isolation, refinement, build quality is much better in a Lexus - feel the leather, feel the headliner, look at the interior panel gaps, etc. You get things such as an automated braking system - you don't have to brake on the highway which has been available from 2005 for Lexus, this technology is only starting to trickle down to Toyota.

I swear if Lexus didn't bring a heap of competition to the luxury market, hubcaps would still be standard on German cars lol.

If interior quality isn't much of an issue, get a base Prado and save yourself some $$$.
