4x4 Tyres New Vs Used

Is it worth the savings (if any) buying used tyres with say 60-80% tread, then finding someone to fit them cheap enough vs just buying them new fitted? 4x4 tyres are not cheap new and they can be had for 50%+ cheaper if you look around. Having said that I've been told tyre centers will charge $50 per tyre to fit them when not purchased new from their shop, so yeah which way should I go, what do you guys do? My first 4x4 by the way.

  • The typical rules for all cars is don't skimp on tyres or brakes. They're the things most likely to save your life.

    • Sure thing but what is the difference @ 30%? Don't matter if you purchased them new or used they are still @ 30% right?

  • in my personal experience i have been just buying the complete tyre including rim from ebay. then selling my old ones. have had some really good deals like:
bought set of 4 Subaru liberty complete wheels with about 70% tread for i think $280. removed the complete wheels from my Subaru outback, sold online for $250, 1 tyre had 10% tread at best, the rest roughly 30% tread. so only cost me $30 for new tyres. fitted them myself.
Currently have a mazda tribute with a set of 4 extra large rims with low profile tyres that i got for $400. i have kept the original wheels for use when i go on trips though as the low profile ones are no good for the bush. so no profit on that one. But at least i dont wear out my 4x4 tyres while doing city driving.
there are alot of guides online to see what will fit your car, i use this a some like http://www.carlsalter.com/wheel_fitments.html and http://www.discountedwheelwarehouse.com/Wheel_Visualizer.cfm
good for when you are buying the exact model wheel or the seller only lists the size's.

    • Nice idea buying rim also and fitting the whole thing, even I can do that :P Any issues with rims not fitting exactly right or tracking issues with tyres? I guess that's my only concern.

      • The ones i have been buying have been for the exact same car, so fit fine. i have never had an issue with ones that didn't ft, i have had ones that looked stupid so sold them and got $10 more than what i paid, which was nice. the example i listed above the subaru's were same year and everything so the tyres were inter-changeable. this was the only time i bought ones that were for a different model. the only ones i have purchase that did not come off the same car were the extra large ones for my mazda. but i made sure the PCD and offset (had no idea what these were before i started doing this) were exactly the same.
if there is an issue with tracking, just get them aligned/balanced.
just don't tell anyone else about this cause then everyone will start doing it :)

        • Ha! Yeah too late for that I guess, once we start talking here the secret (if it was one) is long gone :)
How much does it cost for align/balance these days? Can't remember last time I got that done, must be 10 years, haven't owned a car long enough to get it done lol.

    • Nvm just saw it they are from CA :D

      • Im not sure, i was using it for size information only. Its also a US website so shipping might kill the savings

  • Be wary about ebay rims….some rims could be fakes of the brand and does not have the same quality control. You will find it the hard way if the car hits a bad pothole. Also, please do not cheap out on tyres. And unless you are actually going to use the car in the terrain you are buying the tyres for, then it's part of the 'adventure prep cost'. Please do not buy Mud tyres just because you think they look bad ass on your lifted 4wd. It will add drag/traction problem and cost you mileage.

    • In my case I'm not looking for fancy rims or tyres. Just something to get me road worthy for another year or two. Been looking around and found some Dmax rims with decent tyres but not sure if they will fit my Jackaroo?

      • Then you should be able to pick up normal road tyres. Buy any known brand and you will be fine. Prices start going up when you go A/T, H/T, M/T etc. And tyre shops will try to up sell you those tyres as well.

What year Jackaroo is it, let me see if I can find a suitable tyre for you.

        • 1992 tyres on it are 245 70 16
