LG G3 Vs Sony Xperia Z3 Vs Samsung Galaxy S5

Hi guys, I am getting a phone from vodafone on a plan. My choices are Samsung Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z3 or LG G3. My considerations are:

  1. Battery life
  2. Software update
  3. Performance

Please also let me know if there are any known issues ie. bad camera, easily breakable screen etc. Thanks in advance.

Z3 has the best battery life and I'd say on par with the G3 with performance.

  • I find with my current G3:

    • Horribly slow interface performance when loading/switching apps. Youtube app takes ~4 seconds to open (Lollipop update).
    • When we were in Singapore on holiday, battery life was terrible compared to my friends S5
    • Takes much better photos than expected.
    • Charges very fast when plugged in, but wireless charging is a bit hit and miss.
    • Speaker is on the rear of the phone. Absolutely useless.

I came from a Nexus 5 a few months ago. Nexus was definitely nicer to use (only upgraded as I broke the nexus). I miss my old nexus.

    Hopes this helps.

      • Horribly slow interface performance when loading/switching apps. Youtube app takes ~4 seconds to open (Lollipop update).

Regarding this point, I recently found out through another post that there is a Google Now Launcher which is supposed to be the the stock one from nexus 5 i believe. Perhaps give that a go and see if it is the hardware slowing you down or if it is the launcher itself.

    • I don't have the slow interface problem you described on my G3. I'm on the 3GB ram model and also on lollipop. Speaker is useless though but I don't use it anyway. Battery life is not as good as expected.

  • I have a Z3, I can honestly say I am loving the phone atm.

    Pros

    • Really zippy
    • The launcher is a bloated piece of crap. (came from having two samsung…)
    • Hard button for the camera
    • Great battery life
    • 2 front speakers (I pretty sure they are stereo and not in mono)
    • Aesthetically pleasing (IMO anyway)
    • IPS screen

    Cons

    • For charging convenience, you need a Sony magnetic charging cable or dock
    • Hard to find cases for as it seems to be a niche phone
    • There are reports of it cracking the back glass panel due to overheating (I haven't had it happen and I hope it wont)
    • IPS screen (listed twice because some people like the AMOLED screens
    • The freaking battery charging LED can't be turned off… seriously biggest annoyance of the phone

I think that's pretty much it. It's a nice phone, highly recommended for the battery life or though you might want to wait til the Z4 comes out and it drops in price.

P.S. the software updates are fine, but they have a Sony update center which tells you there are updates and then downloads from the play store… so i don't even know why they bothered… Also, some of the camera apps were hidden but after updates, they show up in the app drawer… don't know how to hide them.

    Cheers

    • agreed with this
      I have the z3 too
      love the phone

do find it overheat a lot, no issues of cracking yet (touch wood!)
      battery is awesome
cases are hard to find, I usually ebay them

charging dock is quite good, saves moving the waterproof covers

      • I bought the devilcase bumper from their official site. Looks really good but it is quite expensive.

The other cases I've tried is the baseus case as well as the Nilkin TPU case. Both are fine but is not really compatible with the dock like the devilcase.

Also, I have a back tempered glass on mine… doesn't overheat that much, possibly due to the heat being transfered to the tempered glass as well as the metallic bumper case.

      • How hot it gets? Can you still hold it on your ear?

        • Its on the back of the phone, so it's not noticeable. Also, only warms up when you play games and do some intensive stuff.

Though I've heard using the 4k video warms it up fast but I've never tried it.

        • @ProjectZero:
yeah I have a cheap plastic cover which allows for the docking station
the back heats up in the middle, even for games like candy crush!

  • Ditto the battery life.
Brother and boyfriend both own Z3 (and mini) and their batteries usually last more than a day.

  • Where can I buy a S5 with Samsung Australia warranty around the $500 mark?

  • Hey peeps,

Just to save creating another new thread. I have a similar query just with different requirements.

The gf is going to be taking my iphone 5S and since I have an ipad, I can get away with not using an iphone again. Plus I can't push myself to pay over $1000 for an iphone.

Sony Xperia Z3 vs Google Nexus 6 32gb vs Motorola Moto X 2nd gen.

    Requirements:
Able to handle gaming and other intensive apps
Minimal to zero lag! Something I hated with Samsung.
    Decent battery life
    Nice enough camera

I used to have Samsung from S2 to S4 and dont really want to go back. So I'm after something a bit different.

Looking forward to experiences from anyone who's been able to compare these next to each other. I can't seem to find any Moto X and Nexus 6 in store to play around with. I used to have Xperia Z and that was pretty good and lasted a long time.

    • I m buying Sony z3 . apart from that random self back cracking ( hopefully , the one i m going buy wont happen) everything is very good for the money u are paying.

      • Yeah after doing a ton of reading, I think I will end up with the Z3 as well.

Should be no problem bringing this over to the UK networks right? I'll be moving in June.

I also found the Z3 Dual Sim, besides the two sim option. Is there any pros and cons against the standard Z3? I'm keeping my Aus number so this option is also ideal for me.

        Cheers!
