Holden XC Barina FOB Key Repair/Replacement

The unlock button in the key FOB for my 05 XC Barina has stopped working. I went to my local Sunday market yesterday which has a trailer that sells replacement keys but they wanted like $300.

I've found some replacement key fobs on Ebay for about $50 but I don't know where I can get the key cut and the remote programmed, plus I'd prefer to repair the original key fob if possible.

Is it possible to repair the key fob?, Are there places that can do that? Alternatively, does anyone know of a locksmith in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne who can possibly cut/reprogram a new key fob?

Thanks.

  • Many remotes don't need reprogramming. In your case its probably the battery that needs replacing.

Maybe look at this site, if its the same key then they say you just replace the battery (yes I know its more than that on their page, but its the same situation minus the replacement buttons)

Unless you know its not the battery!

    • It's not the battery. The lock button works fine. It's just the small button on the inside for the unlock that is wrecked.

And I've already replaced the outer shell. Which is what that link is selling.

That maybe the case. But I think you will find, as long as you have the correct key - the metal part , then the "replacement" will be synced with the car when its inserted. Now that was the case for a 2001 Commodore. And the local centre locksmith was trying to sell me a $300 replacement. Having a friend in the car spares part business helped me (unfortunately he is not alive to find out more)

If you are handy or know someone who is handy with a soldering iron, the switch can be replaced.

This youtube video explains how and I think it's the same key that you have.

Now if you are not, maybe one of the phone repair places can replace the switch as they have the "expertise" to do the soldering. A lot cheaper than the $300 you have been quoted.

Also try whirlpool they may have people with more knowledge on the need to reprogram or not. The ebay sales site says it does need reprogramming, whereas my Commodore didn't need this. But Whirlpool users might have tricks that can help. Eg some cars you can have the car running and switch the transponders while the engine is running. A little tricky but can be done. Now this isn't explained to many because it is tricky to do.

        From an eBay site

STEP 1: Take the key to a modern key cutter - anyone who can cut a key from a code.
STEP 2: Return the freshly cut key and vehicle back to Holden. They will need to programme the key.
HINT - Call around a few different Holden dealerships, some charge a lot more than others. Rural dealerships are generally better priced.
This is an after market replacement case.
Please compare carefully before placing order.

in your case you already have the key part so no need to have that recut, But they are right about calling around. You can do that now even without the unit as they will tell you what they will charge.

  • The remote part of my 2005 XC Barina key isn't working. It can start the car OK however it just can't remotely lock /unlock the doors. I know the battery isn't the problem as I swapped all the parts over with the spare key (which works fine still). The problem seems to be with the circuit board of the key. Can I get a simple replacement circuit board (as I've all the other working parts of the key) or do I need to buy a full new key and have it re-programmed etc?
    Thanks.

  • Hi guys

I've got a Barina 2005 XC and the remote buttons have broken but the key still works fine. What did you end up doing to get a replacement.
    I'm in Melbourne's West.

    Cheers.

    • Nothing. Couldn't find a solution. I asked one place at Laverton market and they wanted about $300. I tried asking a few other places but it didn't end up going anywhere.

      • Ok, I was thinking the guy at Laverton market would have been cheaper. Thanks for the reply.
