Leasing a Car for Holiday in Europe

Hi,

I have booked a European River Cruise and am looking at doing a road trip through France, Italy, Croatia and Spain after the cruise.(Appox 6-8 weeks September 2015)

I have been told to have a look at leasing a vehicle as you get a brand new car and is not much dearer than renting. The French look like they have the best variety with Citroen, Peugeot and Renault offering leases.

If anyone has had any experience in leasing a car in Europe could they please comment especially any pros/cons

Thanks

  • Hi Colin
We leased a car about 4 years ago. Pickup in Paris - brand new Citroen C3, turbo charged diesel.
    Fantastic! Fabulous fuel economy.
Drove through central/south France, then to north Italy, Venice Florence Ravenna etc. Then through the Alps to Frankfurt am Main where my daughter was living. Then a couple of weeks exploring Germany.
We returned the car to a depot near Frankfurt airport, and they shuttled us to the gate.

Whilst driving through a long tunnel in the Alps, there was road work with lamps on stands and the way was narrow. I hit one of the stands and knocked the drivers side mirror clean off! (One of the adjustment errors of inexperienced left hand drivers!)
At Frankfurt I explained and they said - forget about it! I think there was an inexpensive insurance premium built in.
All in all it was MUCH cheaper than hire. ( I have done that as well). And a brand new car!
I hope your venture is as good.
ps Croatian area might be a problem. There are exclusions on some areas and countries.

    • Thanks for the info, I will check out whether Croatia will be a problem

  • renault eurodrive. I think it is a problem to get long term car rental in parts of europe anyway- certainly in france. It used to be about 3 weeks where the leased cars overtook the rentals in temrs of affordability (the leased cars have all their startup charges rolled into the first initial charge). These guys are good for rentals http://www.autoeurope.com/
