Launceston - a Week Long Holiday Activities

Hello fellow travellers,

My friends and I are planning a week long trip in Tissue for later this month.

Any tips on cheap things to do / see, or stay, besides camping which we'll already be doing?

Well focus on the north and west, as I haven't seen that part.

Thanks in advance.

PS. A friend already has a car, so we have transport covered.

  • It was a long time ago, but I recall it being quite a pleasant drive to both George Town and Devonport and walking around the waterfronts and fishing boat port areas was pleasant. Also in Tassie wherever you drive you will see signs for creeks, bush walks etc and most were short walks from the parking areas and very pleasant too. I also went from Launceston to Cradle Mountain and it wasn't really that far to drive. Again some good walks there. I stayed at Cradle Mountain lodge for just one night, and then back to Launceston. Quite an easy trip.

    • Thanks Peck, I'll look into George Town, as I haven't heard of it.

And while we were planning to see the north, it's good to know Cradle Mountain is quite doable, and easy to get to.

There is a tree top adventure/ flying fox thing but that is expensive.

    • Awesome,

      Thanks for sharing!!

  • Launceston city park has some entertaining monkeys. It's totally free. Basically a zoo exhibit in the city park.

In Burnie, go to Burnie Park where they have peacocks in another Zoo type exhibit and then walk to the top of Stoney Creek where there is a waterfall in the park. Also free.

If you get to Strahan drive a little north and there are some massive sand dunes which you can slide down. (That is, if you have something to slide on. Perhaps buy an $8 piece of corflute from Bunnings or a $15 "Skim Disk" from Kmart. Apparently the Strahan caravan park has plastic sleds you can borrow for free if you stay there.)

Cataract Gorge and Cradle Mountain might be some obvious sights but they are worth visiting.

Haven't been to it but there is apparently a Massive slide 20km west of Stanley. Not free though.

The Basin in Launceston is pretty cool on a warm day. It's a free outdoor pool surrounded by a lake and a few bushwalk trails.

Deloraine is a nice place to visit, it's a quite town about an hour from Launceston.

If you feel like travelling a bit further south you can visit my home town of Oatlands. It has an array of old historic sandstone buildings and a huge lake with a haunted island. If you felt like staying a bit longer you could play a round of golf, visit the world war one museum and tour the old flour mill.
