No OPAL Concession Card for Kiwi Students (NSW)

Hey,

If you don't know… The new opal concession card entitlement excludes NZ citizens studying in Aus.
This is complete BS as I have been getting the travel concession card for all previous years of study (at UTS and USYD) and now they have changed the policy which excludes us kiwi students. (NZ citizen, non Aus PR)

It even says on the immigration website that NZ citizens should be treated as a permanent resident in Aus for the purpose of student entitlements.

Just want to know how many other kiwi students are affected by this BS exclusion and what your thoughts are.

  • UTS students cant get the concession opal yet either .sucks that i have to buy a ticket every time.

  • Kiwi's are not supposed to be considered international students, hence we play the same domestic fees. I don't think any kiwis would study here if they had to pay international rates.

  • I agree this is rough, NZ should get full reciprocal rights. Are you positive it is decided, not just a glitch as part of the roll out? I know my citizen partner can't yet get her card at all, as they are apparently poorly organised.

NSW Travel Concessions are only available to Australian citizens or permanent residents:

You are eligible for a NSW Tertiary Student Concession Card if you:
      - are an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia; and
      - reside in New South Wales; and
      - are enrolled in an Australian Qualifications Framework, accredited higher education or vocational education and training course, at a tertiary institution authorised by Transport for NSW to issue tertiary student concession cards; and
      - you are a full-time student enrolled on an internal basis (except where a person, by reason of disability, is enrolled on a part-time basis and/or on an external basis).
