Help with Wireless Setup - Headphones to TV

Hi guys,

I've googled this and to be honest it's got me more confused :S

I'm looking to setup a wireless connection between some headphones and my tv. I believe there's various wireless mediums and then there's different connections to the tv? I need to buy the headphones but I have a tv already (Sony kdl-55ex630). If cost is not an issue, what is the best setup here i.e. which headphones via which wireless medium/connection? (preference to over the ear headphones-not noise cancelling).

Thanks in advance to anyone who can give some suggestions! :)

  • There are few ways to do this:-

    1. If you are already shopping for a home theatre system (WIFI and smartphone needed) : get a home theatre system that allows WIFI connection to a smartphone. I have LG's BH7530WB that you can download an app that allows you to broadcast the audio over WIFI from the home theatre unit directly to the smartphone so that you can hear it with earphones. Good for nights where the kids are asleep.

    2. Get a wireless headphone that comes a transmitter unit. Something like this. If you need to alternate use between TV speakers and headphones, you will need to plug/unplug the headphones.

    • thanks trex
option 2: does it use bluetooth connectivity? I read somewhere that is the best transmission?

      • The model in the above link isn't bluetooth. Bluetooth headsets usually does not come with a transmitter base so the sending device (ie your TV) needs to have bluetooth. So bluetooth is probably not suitable for your requirements.

Bluetooth is a type of wireless technology but it is not necessary the best. In choosing your headphones, look for the sound clarity and quality.

        • thanks for the advice!

  • The cheap wireless headphones will either use FM or IR (infrared) broadcasting. Limited range, and decreased quality. The better branded units will use RF ("2.4GHZ" etc) and have better quality and range, but generally be noticeably more expensive. Classic case of you get what you pay for. If you buy a Sony or Sennheiser, you'll be set.
