Need Help Deciding on Laptop

I'm currently looking around for a cheap laptop <$300 for very light duties (mainly for uni). I already have a quite powerful laptop but broke the left hand side of my screen frame and its not really portable anymore. I'm mainly just gonna use it for light internet browsing, watching lectures, class activities and might use word for assignments. I've only got a semester of uni left so I'll probably sell it to my sister afterwards.

I've had a look online and found two that are in my price range. Not sure if I'm better to go with the hp or toshiba. Price is leaning me towards the HP

I've always had toshiba laptops but I dont really care for brands for this one. Anyway input/suggestions are more than welcome.

  • i've had three HP laptops before, one overheated and caught fire, two of them just died. In my experience, HP laptops don't last as long as my Macbook and Sony laptop (about 3 years old and 5 years old respectively). HP isn't my favourite brand but then again, I haven't bought a HP for at least 6 years. Maybe others can comment. How was your experience with Toshiba?

    • I will atest HP make garbage laptops.. But catching fire? What were you doing?

      • +1

Classic mistake of using it on my bed. Think some of the dirt/dust caught on fire near the air vent. My fault, not really HP's but prior to that I've always used laptops on the bed without them catching on fire.

        • True.. Risky business but it shouldn't catch fire.

    • I agree that HP consumer grade laptops like Pavilion don't tend to last long, but their business grade ones are actually quite good. I have two Elitebook Folio ultrabooks (9470m and 1040) and so far been very happy with them. We also use them at work and the fault rate is very low.

      • I actually second this, the HP business laptop that I owned was running fairly good (after I downgraded it to XP from Windows 7). That computer lasted me 2 years without any problems whatsoever.

  • dell outlet, N2830 4GB 500GB for $239
