Basic Video Editing Freeware

I'm after a very basic video editing program that is free and/or open source, not crippleware or nag ware.
I'll be working on Windows 7 and video is in AVI format. All I need to do is chop a video up to save the wanted parts, I may need to flip or rotate the video depending on which camera I take the footage from. Only other requirement may be to shrink the size of it for uploading, Youtube, Cyliq etc.
Really after something very basic as this is definitely not something I've done before or have any skills in.

Thanks in advance.

You could use AVIDemux (less complex) or Virtualdub (both of which are free open sores) but you'll probably need to google how to do specific operations like cutting and rotating.

My apologies as these aren't what I'd call "basic" skill level applications but there's plenty of help online to use them. They're what I use day to day.

  • Mpeg Streamclip is a handy one to use. I found it fairly simple to use.
As above google should be able to find guides on its use if you need assistance.
Will work on Win7 and with .avi

Edit: You will need quicktime for this application as well

  • I would go Virtualdub, but Windows Movie Maker is an option also…

  • Have you tried Lightworks Free?

    Blurb from the website:
Lightworks Free is our zero-cost version of Lightworks available for everyone. Lightworks Free has all the power of Lightworks, allowing you to export only to MPEG-4 (Web, YouTube and Vimeo) at a maximum resolution of 720p.

Alternatively there is the open source Shotcut.

Lightworks has a very high learning curve — it is generally best not to regard it as a cut and paste program. The other programs the other three commentors have mentioned are better alternatives to somebody who is video editing for the first time.

Once you have upgraded your skills, consider either getting Lightworks or Davinci Resolve Lite.

Here is a list of both free and paid software.

  • Thanks to all that replied, I went with Mpeg Streamclip and tried it on my MAC, within minutes I had a video sliced up and compressed. Only needed a quick Google to find the best compression settings, all good to go. Simple as requested but appears to do all I want

    thanks
