I remember buying a PS3 when I was in Japan, at 15, and bringing it back carry on because you could play multiplayer for free…

What a ridiculous decision to make people pay extra to it.

    • Well you do get games with it.

      • Huh?

I'm not commenting on PS+, just the fact you are forced to pay for MP.

        • Paying for PS+ is paying for MP though.

          @Venom_TAG:

Yes, but it's not the way it has always been. You didn't used to require PS+ to play MP.

        • @Shaw: A lot of people, myself included, only bought a PS3 over an Xbox360 because of the free online. This allowed them to pay for exclusive rights to a LOT of the exclusive Playstation 3 games we know and love.

The fact that PS4 has an online fee, and trying to push that fee with an abysmal games catalog, means that at least I won't be buying one in the near future.

        • @FrankMcFuzz:

Same boat really, I was planning on getting one, but not if I can't play MP. The money went into my PC instead.

        • @Shaw: Man. Are we the same person? lol, I bought a new PC this week so that I can play next gen games on it (The Witcher 3 and Shadow of Morder specifically), because lord knows nobody knows how to make exclusive games for crap anymore.

          (Cough Order 1886 Cough)

Never really been PC, but it just seems like the most sensible thing to do, with consoles going the way that they're going. Which, for reference, is a spiralling nosedive.

        • @FrankMcFuzz: I totally agree, me and my brothers got a ps3 when I was about 14, because not only did we not really have any money as kids, but even if you did pay for online, you'd feel obligated to play, rather than be playing because you felt like it. Kids nowdays in that same situation don't even have that alternative.

        • @LunaAndSol: I actually had an Xbox 360, because "OMG LIKE HALO AND STUFF" (Disclaimer: I have now realized the error of my ways.), and it turned out to be an obnoxious pain. I might buy, say, Gear of War 2 and an Xbox Live subscription in January. Play it until early Feb and then not touch it until, say, GTA4 in September, then stop, then use it again for Halo3 in December. Oh no, I got Dark Souls in January and need to buy another subscription!

Let's pretend for a moment that all those games aren't grossly out of chronological order.

That was my biggest problem with Xbox Live. Not everyone is one of those close minded 'I can only shoot a real person to feel alive' gamers, and may only play a couple of games a year that require multiplayer. So it's like, only 2 or 3 months in 12 get actual usage of this obscene subscription, and as you said it'd feel like you need to, rather than wanting to.

Hey. Guess what. Steam and Nintendo don't have subscriptions. Guess where I'm going, whilst PS4 and Xbone learn to get their skull out their anus. I've had more fun with Monster Hunter 4's online than I do with most other games and I didn't have to shell out a cent of subscription crap.

blame Xbox. they're the ones that introduced paid multiplayer.

I don't mind paying for on-line if I get my moneys worth… Eg: Reliable, Stable service which is curated.

PlayStation's service isnt quite there yet…

I also think that creating a cost barrier of entry actually deters under-age bigots/racists/(profanity)… Not completely but every little bit helps!
