au.element14.com - Buying a Raspberry Pi as a 'company'

I want to buy a Raspberry Pi from element14, however, it seems as though if you want to purchase the latest Raspberry Pi for a little less than RRP, you should say that you are a 'company' buying it, rather than just buying it as personal use. They show a pop-up saying to buy it from a reseller if you are just buying it for personal use. Do most people just make up a random company name to buy it for less?(I believe all the information you have to give about your company is a name). Or can you get in trouble for doing this?

Thanks.

  • I think the only reason it is cheaper as a company is because element14 sells ex-GST to companies who are registered for GST. Unless you're registered for GST and have an ABN to prove it, they won't give you the cheaper price.

    • Oh okay, no worries. Do you happen to know where I can get the newest raspberry pi for the cheapest? Everywhere seems pretty pricey

    • lol an ABN to "prove it"? ABN numbers are publicly listed.

    • It's only the displayed price that is cheaper, GST is still added to the final invoice for all customers.

  • 26144073073 is the fake ABN I always give.

  • I bought a rasp pi 2 from Element 14 in Australia about a month ago as an individual. I didnt even notice you needed to be a business. I just put n/a as the ABN. All was fine. They even contacted me personallly via phone afterwards to setup a personal non-business account with them. Seems they are happy for the extra sales and very keen to have new customers on their books. They did assess that I work for a large engineering firm in an engineering role, although my purchase was not for work. Not sure if that had anything to do with it. Their service was very good.

I'm guessing they try to steer clear of "Mums and Dads" as 99% of what they sell is very technical in nature and they probably dont want the hassles.
