Need a Data Recovery Program for Portable Hard Drive?

Hey guys
my hard drive crashed a few months ago and it has 1 TB worth of movies pictures and music.

I just purchased a 2 TB yesterday and am trying to transfer my stuff over onto that so I can hopefully reformat my old one and fix it.

Anyway, my stuff is still coming up on my old hard drive. It's just so slow I can't actually open anything. Tring to move 4gb of songs and it's so far taken about 12 hours -.- are there any software programs that will make this a little less painful? To pull the files off faster? Anything?!?!?! Haha

Thanks

    teracopy copies faster imo.

I dont know if you're using an external drive, but generally the shorter the cable, the faster the copy.

It appears you can actually access the files, so a file recovery software isn't required.

Can you launch crystaldiskinfo and read the drive's SMART attributes? Sounds you have a drive that is about to die.

A good tool for copying files off a dying HDD would be Roadkill's Unstoppable Copier
    http://www.roadkil.net/program.php/P29/Unstoppable%20Copier

it will not actually speed up the file copying process. However, it is a more aggressive method — it tries to copy the corrupt files over and over again until the file is of a satisfactory quality before moving on to the next. This behaviour can be configured before you start the copying process.

The other alternative is simply boot into linux and then use the dd command and copy the whole darn disk into a file, bad blocks and all.

  • I've got a portable WD elements 1TB that has 60gb of room left. So a lot of stuff on there.

I'm not sure what's wrong with it. I can plug my hard drive into a computer, it will see the files, but it won't load them. I used it for watching movies on my ps3 and if I plug it into that it will crash my ps3 All together. my stuff is still there, I can see it, on a laptop I can access the photos but not music or movies as they're larger files and it crashes. I've moved about 2gb worth of stuff so far and it's all accessible on my new hard drive but it's taken about 12 hours to get this far. And it's 2gb!!!! I have a other 958 to go haha -.- just want something to pull the files off At a faster speed because this is killing me. I'm thinking something is corrupted but I'm not very good with IT stuff so I have no idea how to tell Or what to do..

Once I get the files off I'll format everything, if it doesn't work after that it's bin time. Stupid thing -.-

Thanks for your help guys, I'll check the programs out. :)

  • Get a copy of Spinrite from grc.com. Best hard drive program there is.

Create a bootable cd/floppy/usb and boot off it, select one of the levels (for your drive I'd start at level 2, try again, then maybe level 5). I have seen Spinrite work on seemingly dead drives. It is not a data recovery system, but a tool that forces the hard drive to fix itself. For a 1 tb drive it may take overnight/longer (longest I have had it running is 34 days!) but it wont stop until your drive is A: completely dead or B: fixed enough to copy your data off.
