I read it as only for online play, if you want to play with Steam friends they will need copies. For local couch co op you just need another controller. From Steam: Online and Couch Co-op Multiplayer
Explore on your own if you dare or play with friends in 4-player same-screen and online co-op. Your friends can become foes as you compete to see who can claim the most kills and the most gold.
I've tested this in every local co-op configuration - Only 1 copy is needed as long as you're all playing in the same room. One player can use the keyboard and the other(s) can use Xbox controller, or everyone can use controllers. It's seriously the best designed multiplayer game I've seen in over a decade. Campaign is a little short, but the devs got the formula RIGHT (even the DLC!) - and I for one want to support them and encourage other game devs to follow suit.
One copy per machine running the game obviously.
Played the original arcade version back in the 80's and 90's.

With the 4 pack, do you need to gift the other 3 keys to people on purchase or can you hold onto them and give out at a later date?
Hold onto them as long as you like as with every other steam multipack.

I hate gifting straight away as 90% of the time, the people I gift to don't end up playing the game at all. Good to see that I can wait and gift it to those who do want to play the game (esp with me).

I was so very disappointed with this version of Gauntlet. I was expecting something with the feel of the old game but with some updates gameplay etc. All I got was the old game with new graphics and the occasional upgradable item. It wad a $20 game so I can't be to annoyed about it and at $5 it will provide some good times but unfortunately the replay value is low.
There's good and bad bits about this version but at $5 even with my above complaints, you can't really go wrong
Agreed I was really disappointed as well, better off playing the original rom.
For those that don't know, you can download and play Gauntlet using MAME (the Multiple Machine Arcade Emulator). There is uncertainty around the legality of downloading the ROM…
I usually feel I get my monies worth of entertainment if even a $5 game (cheaper than an average lunch) has provided me a few hours of fun. *edit was meant as reply to above
