Microsoft Surface Pro 3 Sale

Hi Guys,

So I'm actually new here and after procrastinating for weeks I decided I would finally ask my first question. I hope you guys can help, this site seems pretty cool - if only my mum found out about it - ow you guys have a thing or two to learn from her - after returning from a trip to Thailand, she tried to bargain with the taxi driver at the airport - who looked at us like we were from another planet. yep nothing is off limits when it comes to bargaining- or so she likes to think.

I guess I take on after my mum a bit in that I've been delaying getting surface pro since the first one come out. I kept telling my self that once the new version comes out, the old one would be on sale and thus would be a better deal. But as luck would have it, the new version seems to get my attention more then the old one and now years later I'm still having the same issue. I finally decided to go through with the purchase from the microsoft site as theyre having a student special at the moment (10% off plus $100 credit) but, me being me am wondering if theres going to be a better sale later on. Does Microsoft have sales often ? have you guys seen any better discounts on the surface pros or is that deal the best its ever going to be? Ive also seen rumors about the 4th version being released at the end of the year? does that sound right ? (am I sad ? Yep.)

any advice would be highly appreciated

Thank you !

  • Surface Pro 3 has a lot of throttling issues from my experience, SP2 in a similar configuration (SP2s have 4th gen processors as well) throttles less from what I can gather. Just my two cents! Good luck!

  • Wait a bit more for the 4th version, should be a major upgrade over 3 with full Windows 10 support.

Yeh I jumped the gun as well buying the SP3 the other day with the same student deal with $100 voucher. I dunno, I think for what I am using it for it is fine and good (if you're happy be happy! otherwise if you don't really need it now and are willing to wait then go for the return :P). There is a lot of speculation for what the 4th version will bring, but no one really knows I guess.

One thing I noticed, SP3 does seem to get a bit hot (even when just web browsing) - but not sure if that's an update issue or a consistent flaw, will report back!

P.S. loved your story haha, your mum sounds awesome

    • I recently got one too, an i5 model and yes it's disappointing how hot and loud the fan gets while browsing. The battery only lasts 3-4 hrs as a result of that. Done some research and seems that chrome is to blame, though I've switched to firefox and still have the same problems?

Other than that I have the dock which makes it a full fledged desktop and is great!

Ah yeh sweet, got 256GB, 8GB Ram, i5. That's so annoying, yeh I was going on fb and ozbargain and it was just going haywire and blazing up. Cooled down after a while but it wasn't pleasant :P

Man that batt life is pretty disappoint though, far from the projected 9 hours. Seems like SP1 batt life levels :/

    • How are you finding it so far ? is it worth its cost? the digitiser makes it attractive but that battery life sounds very dodgy - is that a standard thing ?

I purchased the i7 256 this week. Its pretty neat, I'm happy with it.

CompNow have a pretty decent sale if you want the dock and keyboard.

    Waiting for the fourth gen!

One of the rumours I've heard about the fourth gen is that they are considering options to make it a fanless tablet with reduced performance (Core M), as a result, it might actually be cheaper than what SP3 used to be. (Though, this is just a rumour).

    • But what makes the current Surface Pro good is the fact that it is thin yet powerful. If it only had a Core M processor they can no longer use the tagline 'The tablet that can replace your laptop', since most laptops would have a Core i series processor.

      • I thought Core Ms are not that bad (as in Atom CPU bad). I personally see Surface Pros as a hybrid that is no way thin enough to be considered as a tablet (compared to Android tablets and iPads). It's a hybrid, so I see it stuck in between the form factor and the performance. Making it a fanless would make it closer to a tablet more. If they make it cheap enough so that it's at least comparable to laptops at that performance level, I think it would be alright. Not all laptops are built with core i and not all laptops have to be as good as a core i laptops (if the price is cheap enough).

If the rumour is true, (cheaper and with Core M), SP4 would probably position itself in between the cheap Atom tablets and the Surface Pro.

That being said, it's just a rumour.

    • that sounds more like an RT thing then the pro version. it would make more sense.

    • the first serious even with the pro line had a few issues with it and I think they tried and fixed some of it with each new version but the pro 3 still has issues with it. I mainly want it because of the active digitiser but it seems like I should wait a decade before thats perfected

  • Now that Surface 3 is released http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-au/products/surface-3 there should be some disruption in this space. Price wise this should be good since more products available and wider price range too.

I'm interested in getting one either S3 or SP3. I guess price will be major factor. Will there be a sale soon???
