FREE .me Domain for One Year for Students from Namecheap

70

Free domains on the .me for one year. Open to Australian universities. Currently I could only see Charles Sturt University and Curtin University listed. Looks like if your university isn't listed yet you would need to apply for your university to be accepted on the Contact form.

After the first year, it's $20/year or $25/year for premium, so one could move the domain to a cheaper plan and cancel the namecheap plan.

The main question of interest on the Freqently Asked Questions page:

  • my tafensw.net.au doesnt work…..

  • That's great and all, but CSU doesn't give their students email addresses so we miss out on pretty much all of these.

    • You can use [email protected] it will redirect whatever to whatever email you have with CSU

      • Not working on my end?

  • Doesn't accept my uni's e-mail addresses.

    Not eligible for @uon.edu.au

  • Isn't this just a single part of the GitHub Student Dev Pack? Or am I missing something?

  • Work for @uts.edu.au

I encourage students to apply for THIS GitHub education pack, which includes the .me domain name for free, as well as an SSL certificate, $100 of digitalocean credit (enough to host a decent VPS for 20 months), and a bunch of other useful stuff.

It's not instant, but it worked for me using University of Canberra email address. You'll need to provide a short explanation of why you need it in the application, you can simply say that it's so you can better your programming and web development skills or something and it'll work.

    • Thanks for the tip! This would actually really help me with this. As i couldnt get a uni email working, i applied with a copy of my timetable. Hope its accepted quicker than 'a few weeks'…

      • Took more than a few weeks for me, but it's worth the wait in my opinion.

They might have just been really busy in January, or I'm not sure what, but it did eventually come through.
