Ah, the Gym of Scientology… once you're in, it's very hard to get out…

After my experiences, I wouldn't go to a commercial gym for free.

Do you mind to tell us your experiences?

Fitness First are always offering free visits, all you have to do is ask and act interested in joining.
They will want your contact details so they can hound you every few months over the next year about signing up for a membership.
There are always fitness first hawkers roaming Brisbane CBD trying to get new members.

I used to be a member there, but decided good life were much more pleasant to deal with.

very true, avoid at all cost.
if u want to cancel your membership, have to make appointment and there are fees involved like the big banks.

At fitness first, most of the weight loss comes from your wallet. You do get a good work out trying to get away from them though.

his right! but i'm still a member there lol…..

I agree with oprahfan, I would be very careful about the free thing. Last time I was given free 1 week pass and was told no obligation - then later found out that I have to pay for cancellation fee!! It's stated deep inside their terms&condition booklet! They say - free to try but cancel for a fee!

Make sure you don't hand out your credit card information or any money! If it's free you should be able to go in and out. Personally I would rather go to Council owned/operated gym. Straight forward fee structure and no BS. At some centre, there is even swimming pool!

    • A friend recently got caught with a similar deal at a martial art school in Sydney, got signed up via direct debit (savings) at an open day then reconsidered but was told "too late, we've already got your bank details, we'll bill you for a year whether you come or not"! (charming)! :(

My simple advice then, close the savings account, write them a nice letter terminating the membership and politely tell them to f@#k off! No blood from a stone, and very few of these immoral businesses are stupid enough to try to pursue a contract based on questionable marketing practices! Problem solved! ;)

Yeah the fact that they called me 7 times in a day about a year after I cancelled my membership with them (and after I told them to go jump after the second call) means I wouldn't be attending this or giving them any of my details whatsoever.

The fitness centre industry has some very dodgy operators that act more like the clichéd used car salesman or dodgy finance people - Not sure if it's the steroids or sales targets at work. Your wellbeing is often an after thought once the finance is taken care of. When the biggest operators leave so many of their customers with a bad taste in their mouth you should be cautious. Time for a proper clean up of the industry with some new players…

  • This is their birthday and they're offering free pass just to mention.
I can easily go pass their tactics of pulling us in. lol say you're a tourism or goin for a holiday later, then they'll never contact you again.

  • many gyms offer free days and trials at any time. ignore fitnessfirst, they'll bug the crap out of you while you are there and afterwards too, they get your phone number
