Daiso - What Are Your Best Purchases?

For those out of the loop Daiso is the 100 yen shop. 3600 stores in japan, and now 19 stores in Australia. All [most] products are $2.80.

So i wanted to find out, What have you bought there that they would recommend to others? (or not recommend)

So far the main item i've been really impressed with is these red handled screw drivers for opening up computers. Very sturdy and haven't stripped the heads.

Small silicone tongs have been lasting well.

Things that haven't done so well

  • 3* 3 bladed "mens" razors (just too dull)
  • 5 drill bits 3-3.6mm (were not strong enough)

Anyone else?

      • I've been to several 100 yen stores in Japan. This is all the same merch. I've seen some of it in China, too..selling for about 20c

Note that not everything is $2.80 anymore- they have notices up in store with certain products labelled to denote a higher price point.

The umbrella (comes in various sizes) are not too bad sturdy for a period of time given that there is no wind…

  • +2

Last time I was there they had disposable underpants. No shit yo. Literally.

My favourite purchases so far have been the kitchen sponge in the shape of a piece of sponge cake (complete with strawberry on top), clothes pegs in the shape of mickey mouse ears and a frog-shaped pot plant. All ridiculous purchases but they all do their job which is the main thing right!? Love the music they play too!

Lunch boxes/containers/rice moulds/separators etc. They are great for primary school kids and popular right now. The Australian sellers are selling a lot of this stuff for about five times the price.

Magic erasers - cheaper than Woolies etc.

Cellophane bags for gifts. Cute and very handy.

Small storage solutions - some of their little baskets are great.

    • Lunch boxes/containers/rice moulds/separators etc.

Creative, artistic bento box lunches FTW!

anyone opening one in WA? gosh..why we always have to wait..

On the positive side, think about all the money you can save. One $2.80 here, another $2.80 there can really add up. According to what the others are saying here, many daiso stuff are just disposables - waste of money, only a few highlights. Theres a store close to my home that I visit once every 3 years.

    • All too often, I see this lament here on OZB; you poor guys :-(…

Making post relevant: I buy too much stuff from Daiso (cheap, but relevant, retail therapy)…I can recommend their silicon(e) cooking utensils* eg. ladles, spoons, slotted spoons. For $2.80, the equivalent products in Colesworths would be $5-9$, and more in the specialised kitchen stores.

      *unless they've changed the quality.

  • The machine screw sets.

The little storage containers , most are great quality

3ds charger usually $15 elsewhere for a genuine one. Daiso one works just as well but $2.80
You can get 50 paper cups for 2.80. Elsewhere not even close.

Looks like the prices of some products are going to increase from the 1st of April:

    • well there goes the everything is $2.80 philosophy.. april fool's perhaps?

    • Yes! How could I forget the charcoal moisture absorbers - I love the reusable ones in material that you can fold in with your sheets or hang off your rails. These cost about $15-20 each in our local organic shop (the reusable ones that is).

  • I like the lil crochet bear projects + phone charm beading projects etc and a few other crafty things represent much better value than the same kinda deal at lincraft. I also grabbed s few magic tricks which made for a fun afternoon once.

  • Umbrellas. Great value.

Yeah! Love Daiso! But alas I live in Perth (boo) and there's no Daiso in WA so far. I'm so jelly of you eastern states guys, cuz you get Aldi, Costco AND Daiso. Totally thinking of moving to Melbourne just because of those three places. Is that bad? Haha. At least I can get fat on Krispy Kreme now, so there's that.

I've made the trips to various Daiso throughout the world, though. Daiso in Japan (100 y) was my first experience with Daiso (first trip was in 2006) and in my opinion they had the best stuff, and the most variety and they were also the cheapest. I love the ceramic ware like cute mugs, and I got a really great pair of sunglasses. Also they had a ton of Japanese souveniers, like kokeshi dolls. Then I went to Daiso in Singapore ($2 SGD) and it was pretty good, but way more expensive. It had less variety. Daiso in Malaysia was second cheapest, (MYR 5)but had the least amount of cool items, and Daiso in the US (1-1.50+ USD - I am so Daiso obessed I looked up where Daiso was in both San Fran and Seattle so I could see if they had different stuff or not) was really great. The AUD was stronger when I went to the US last year, so, I got a ton of bargains. Mostly toiletries because those are great to stock up on while traveling, things like those cotton wipes and cotton buds and stuff, loofah, scissors, tweezers, slippers, socks, sunscreen etc.

My fave stuff was probably my sunglasses I got in Japan (2011)— only got it because it was really hot that day and I needed them. They are amazing quality for the price, polarized and everything. I also got some cute nerdy vanity glasses there, (I'm lame like that) with the clear lenses that are nifty. They're a little silly but I like to wear them. Also, really cute mugs with like little rainbow animals on it. Their ceramic-ware is the cutest, and I have about three mugs I got from there. I also got an ink cartridge nibbed pen that gave you two refills, which I still use is great.

I have a soft spot for their organizational stuff, though. Like I like looking at their drawer baskets, plastic bins and stuff. Keep thinking I'll get it all and re-organize everything but I never actually do.

I can't bring myself to buy the snacks though because I got too accustomed to the 100y food places in Japan (like Lawson 100) that kinda left me spoiled for choice, so I keep thinking snacks are a rip compared.

Just gotta do Korea, Canada, and Australia and I'll have completed my Daiso tour of the world!

  • Dried Mango & Calpis (Mini 4pk) - Delicious!
    Make-Up Brush Cleaner
    Origami Paper mainly for Cranes
All the Organization Boxes/Dividers - LOVE these!

  • Melamine sponges, aka Chux Magic Erasers. Works exactly the same, and cost much much less for more squares (Sorry, I can't spare a square)

  • Fabric type storage trays and a little trashcan for my TV.

  • I LOVE the kitchen knives at Daiso. Especially the larger meat cleaver style. For 2.80, you can't go wrong.
