Hair Clippers - Wahl?

Looking for some reasonably priced hair clippers. I visited 2 Shaver Shop stores yesterday and the sales assistants in both were pushing this one http://www.shavershop.com.au/online-store/hair-clippers/hair… telling me they are a good product and half price so a good deal.

I had originally only wanted to spend around $20 and had seen a few different models at various stores - so the Wahl clippers are double what I intended to pay. I was told that it was a waste of time buying the cheaper packs as they don't last long and they tend to pull the hair and generally don't work as well. I started to have a look an amazon to see what the prices are like there and I realised that Wahl seem to have a hell of a lot of different styles at different prices (plus the current exchange rate makes me wonder if it's worth buying there).

The clippers will probably only be used by me (clippering sides of Mohawk) once a month or so. So is it worth spending the $39 or should I go for a cheaper option? Anyone know of a better deal out there?

Wahl are the highest quality/longest known brand for clippers. I don't think $40 is a ridiculous price to pay for something you would hope to get many years of use from.
That said, we bought a $20 set of Remington clippers from Woolies or BigW. They have performed fine cutting our kids hair, although the kid with thick hair claims they pull his hair if you don't go pretty slowly.

I've had the same Wahl clippers for years. Oil after use and they'll serve you well.

I have similar Wahl clippers except mine are the control version: http://www.shavershop.com.au/online-store/hair-clippers/hair…

The one you linked in your post and mine are both made in the USA, the cheaper ones are made in China IIRC. $40 is reasonable, I've had mine for years and as long as you keep them oiled they are fantastic.

  • I bought a cordless Wahl clippers about 6 months ago and I simply love it! I would recommend a cordless model rather than corded. With the model that I bought, if the battery runs flat simply plug in the charger and it functions just like a corded unit.

I bought mine from ebay for about AUD40, here. I see Shaver Shop sells this same model for AUD69.95.

  • I bought my Wahl Clipper for $35 in 2008 and still going strong. I clean it regularly as well but I had to unscrew the blades to properly clean it. Other that, I use eucalyptus oil to lubricate them…

  • Wahl is worth it IMHO

  • No problems with my Wahl. I clean and oil it regularly.

  • Thankyou everyone for your replies. Looks like I might go with the Wahl for $39.

  • I think they're only around $50 at costco for a big set with a beard trimmer too and they're worth the money. I've had a set for 30 years and still work like new. You'll never need replace them. You can even have the blades sharpened if you need.

  • Had my Wahl over 25 years. Use it for hair (um, not much left) and beard. As other posters mention all you need to do it oil it after each use and give it a proper clean every now and then.

Have a look at what brand hairdressers use - I'd put money on them using Wahl, but as I haven't set foot in a hairdresser in 25 years that may have changed.

All I know if I have saved a lot of money doing my own hairdressing. Instead of worrying about the cost you should perhaps factor in how quickly you will recoup your purchase price by doing your own trimming…

  • I am looking at this 2 unit (both currently 1/2 price) to cut my kids hair. Not sure if its better to spend the extra $5

    Deluxe Pro - $34.95

    Control Pro -$39.95

    • From what I've read you are better off going with the clippers that are made is the USA. So the Control Pro ($39.95) might be best.

I ended up buying the $39 clippers I mentioned above and they are great. No problems at all.

      • I bought the deluxe pro today, as its got more items (nose trimer and single AA battery operated mini clipper) and $5 cheaper.

Main clipper is made in china though, but since under the same brand they should have good QC as well.

  • If you don't need it to be wireless, you will get a better trim with colors clippers that run from the mains.
