Term deposit isn't good, just get ubank or ing savings account. Higher interest rate, and you dont get penalized for withdrawals
Term deposits have lower rates at the moment, but they are fixed vs variable for the savings accounts. It depends on your risk preferences.
invest in property.

$1000 to $10000 is a big range, and "a while" isn't really a good time indicator.
If it's closer to 5 digits and long term, VTS/VAS split is usually the "go to" for relatively safe long-term investment.
Short term, chuck it in a (relatively) high interest saver.
If you have no idea you can chuck it in a term deposit for a few months. They have pretty low rates at the moment, but it's better than it sitting there. Or you can open a high yield account like Bankwest's.
