6 Berth Camper & Insurance Options

I am taking the family on a NT self drive Holiday.

We are driving from Darwin to Melbourne for about 18 days.

Have been looking at a number of camper options as well as insurance and was wondering if people could provide their experience and knowledge on the following:

1. Best camper company to use

2. Do you know of any camper companies that I can redeem Qantas FF Points instead of paying rental fees

3. I Don't want to take out insurance with the camper company as this can be expensive. I am looking at the best option for Travel insurance that would cover me for driving the camper and any possible damage, Or even better if it would be covered if paying with a certain brand of credit card.

Any help appreciated

  • I used 1cover for this purpose before.

Didn't have to lodge anything, so I cannot say if they are any good, but they were much cheaper than the in-house option of the campervan company.

I used Travellersautobarn and negotiated a bit to get extra drivers and sth else I forgot for free. They were friendly, helpful and the camper was good ( Sydney - Melbourne return )

I used a Hippie Camper around Cairns and they were not very friendly ( after I said I didn't want to use their insurance ) and also had fees which were mentioned in the t&c which they weren't up front about, which I didn't like.
Ended up paying a bit more.

The camper was ok for the age, it had many scratches etc, the gearbox was shit and annoying when driving.

    • Thanks Hansai, I will check out 1Cover. travellers autobarn and hippie campers don't do 6 berth :(

      • Depending on how flexible you are and where you want to do, it might actually work out better $$$ wise to rent two smaller campers ( 3 berth each or 4 /2 ). They are easier to drive too. 6 berth are really expensive and there are not that many available.

        • Unfortunately cant do 2 cars as we only have 1 driver and we are a family so want to travel in the one camper

  • i just got ours with woolworths travel insurance. Use the code EDRTRAVEL for 10% off. They cover for $5000 which is what the excess is, most don't. We hired our Motorhome through Autorent Hertz…I shopped around and they were cheapest I found…but that was for Tasmania. Hope that helps :-)

  • thanks I will check out both options

  • Autorent Hertz is just Tasmania unfortunately

  • Last year (July 2014) we spent 12 days around Alice springs, we hired from Mighty Campers, the van was a little tired, but they were the cheapest and were friendly and helpful.

We didnt take insurance (live dangerously i says :) ) and all was good.

An important note… you are not allowed to go off road with a campervan and that means a dirt road of more than 10Ks if i remember correctly, so just be sure that you dont have any 100 Klm roads planned (like we did).
