I wanted to do similar to you about 18 months ago and did a fair bit of research. I wanted to get into the quad game as cheaply as I could. I went with an Ideafly I-fly4, which seemed to be the cheapest ready-to-fly option that could easily carry a camera.

In the end the costs were:
    Ifly4 - $312
    Lipo battery - $29
    Transmitter and Receiver - $88
    Battery charger/balancer - $35
    Camera gimbal - $53

After all that, the thing was almost impossible to control, so I purchased a new flight controller plus a GPS module to make it more stable so that I could actually take some decent footage. This came to about $140.

So, as you can see, I spent well over $600. I lost interest in it after that, so I guess in the last 12 months things may have changed and there's probably cheaper options out there.

Anyway, I thought I'd share my experience to warn you that there are other costs that creep in as you start to really get into it.

    Good luck.

    • Thanks for sharing your experience!

Btw, have you heard of the DJI Phantom? - I hear great things about it.

      • ditto, seems to be the go for entry level stuff. found it at digidirect for $800, just thinking about it somemore and holding out for one of their 10% off errthang sale

        • The Phantom was very highly regarded when I was researching. Have you looked at Hobby King pricing?

        • @Yadekul: $580 usd w/o shipping, so ~$757 aud. digi will be cheaper during the 10%, and moreso if you're planning on going o/s

  • I followed this setup for a 450 quad copter and it works perfect www.notsealed.com/quad_australia.html
Cost me under $200 as I already had a controller. Enough power for 10min and lift a gopro no problems.
