Found Keys on The Floor

Hey OzBargainers,

Just need some help in terms of what to do based on the premise that I found some random set of keys during my walk this morning. Just wondering what should I be doing with them? Give them into the Police? Cause in all honesty, it's not like I can figure out anything bout them, can I? Any "Key Experts" amongst you guys?! Thanks for the help in advance.

Take them to the police station. If you're feeling nice, might also be worth putting up a few signs in the area saying you found a set of keys and handed them into the police station.

    • Returning it to police could be kind of useful~~~ maybe . I went to our local police station to see if anyone had returned any keys and the officer brought out a big box say equivalent to 3 computer CPUs filled with all kinds of keys. No Luck , but amazingly there were all sorts of other keys, some with names and numbers that the police hadn't bothered calling and returning.

Also post on gumtree. We found my daughter's phone that way due to the kindness of a stranger.

    • Will be posting on Gumtree tomorrow night. Posted signs this morning notifying them that keys were found and that they're with local police.

Was there a power pole close to where you found them? Perhaps after you taken them to the police, post a note there in case they back track in hope of finding them.

Yeah I ended up putting notes on three power poles near the area.

What keys? C4 type are easily replaced, but car keys can be $100+ so worth going to a little effort

    • They were general keys, not car keys for sure. They look like storage unit keys.

Put notice on a local noticeboard like IGA or shopping centre. Or maybe put them back where you found them for the owner to find.

  • +1 for handing them into the police. Some kind stranger did just that with my programmable car key that Ford were quoting me $500+ to replace!

Just put a sign up where you found them, say you handed them in at x police station.

Just hand them in no need to go posting signs And shit.

      Such eloquence. and shit.

    • Who said anything about posting shit?
Are you some type of bitter and twisted former postie?

  • If they were found on the floor just post a note on the building you found them in.

    • just post a note on the building you found them in.

or better still, put the note inside the building near where the keys were found.

      • There aren't any apartments nearby. It's all houses.

I'm pretty sure if you find keys you now own what ever they can open.

Try as many doors and cars as you can with your new found keys! Who knows, you may now have entry to a Porsche, Ferrari or luxury apartment!

  • Last year I lost a set of work keys. I knew I must have lost them on a stretch of public footpath about 500 mts long. I walked up and down that path 3 times searching for them. No luck. Then I did 1 more trip with my 17 yr old son. He saw the keys. Someone had picked them up off the footpath and put them on small brick fence (about 600mm high).
I think a sign would be good. Then give them to police. The real owner will identify them from the rest.

I went back today and posted a sign for them to know that the keys were with local police.
