Need Tips for Travelling to Melbourne

Hello Ozbargainers,

I would like the collective's opinion on how I should plan my travel. I have a placement with a few friends from 25th May till 5th June. I have searched for flight tickets and found that going from SYD to Avalon airport is cheaper than Tullamarine airport. My placement will be around University of Melbourne (Parkville campus) and our accommodation will also be somewhere closeby there. So the question I would like to ask is should I cop the extra and pay to Tullamarine airport or is there a cheap transport option from Avalon to University of Melbourne?

Any other tips to make my stay as true to the ozbargain's principles as possible are greatly appreciated.

Thanks all

Avalon is close to Geelong; not Melbourne. You'd be better off flying into Tullamarine for both time and money (and hassle)

    • I looked at public transport option to get to Lygon Street near Uni of Melbourne, but it look a bit complicated compared to Sydney. Any useful site or app to help with this?

  • flying morning/day/night?
    how many friends?

    • We plan to arrive 24th May any time as long as it is cheap and then must leave on the Friday (5th June) after 5pm. 5 people all together travelling

Rent a car from Sydney and share the driving with 5 of you. Then you will have transport while you are there as well.

Or maybe you can get a car relocation special to drive down and get a flight back. You then only pay for one way. (or vice versa depending of whats available)

By the time you do transfers from the airport etc, you have taken 3-4** hours from start to finish while the car takes 9 hours maybe less depending on where in Sydney you are travelling from and much cheaper for 5 sharing the cost than flying and taxi's etc.

        **
        Trip to airport 30 mins
Check in with 30 mins to spare
        Flight time 1 Hour
        Wait for bags 30 mins
Transport to city Melb 1 hour

        Flight p/p

        Flight to Avalon:
        (JS)
        SYD - MEL 7AM/1215PM - $55/$59 + $22 bus as per joe88
        MEL - SYD 6AM/840PM - $59/$79 + $22 bus as per joe88

        Flight to Tulla
        (JS Pricematch Tiger) After discount
        SYD - MEL 7AM - $53.10 + $18 skybus
        MEL - SYD 740PM - $112.50 + $18 skybus

So seems like you should book the way down with JS pricematching tiger, and the way up fly from Avalon.

I'd also suggest getting a limo when arriving from tullamarine, theres companies out there that will transfer you (quick look is the $105 mark). might be cheaper than $90 ($18 x5 for skybus) + tram ride to the hotel

Avalon is fine - just takes a bit longer.

Book a coach transfer with Sita coaches (about $22) which takes you to Southern Cross Station. You'll need to buy a myki pass (you'll need it to get around Melbourne anyway). Take a train to Melbourne Central and then catch a tram up to Parkville. Fare will be less than $4.

Airport transfer seems better than that skybus and tram; $18-$20 per person though check suburbs and companies…the one I'm looking at is http://vhaairportshuttle.com.au/Melbourne-Airport-Shuttle-Bu… but was just from quick search, I haven't used them before.

You could also post a task on Airtasker e.g. https://www.airtasker.com/tasks/avalon-airport-pickup-dockla… Though not sure if anyone with a normal car can take five..probably not, will probably need something bigger lol.

    • Thanks guys! Great suggestions, keep them coming.

Ozbargain way… (if you don't want to bus/car)

Catch the Tiger flight Syd-Mel for $60, get the public transport bus to Broadmeadows and train in the the city, then tram to Parkville for $3.80. It will take around around an hour and a half to do by public transport but that's still probably quicker than coming from Avalon.
