CCTV Camera Upgrade

Hi,

So I recently got an all in one Swann system. It came with a 500gb DVR capable of 4 cameras. The cameras are only 480tvl and is letting it all down.

I've been looking on AliExpress and similar and have been eyeing 1200tvl or 2mp. Seem to be able to get a decent special. Camera for under $40 each.

Mine currently running on 12v and RCA cable. Is it a simple as swapping cameras over? Hard drive will fill up quicker, but the main thing I will do is remote view from my phone or computer.

doesnt composite cable bottleneck tvl at those levels?

  • If you're truly asking for my opinion then please do not get upset when I say dump the whole thing and go IP cameras. There are some seriously well priced IP systems around right now (almost as cheap as analogue) and it is simply SO much better AT THAT PRICE RANGE. It is also much easier to build on.

Suggest staying away from Swann also. I have yet to see a nice Swann system. It is usually cheap rebranded chinese stuff anyway.

    • Hi there, I am looking at putting in IP cameras, do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

      • If you want cheap cheap - something like these kits:

        http://www.altech.com.au/products.aspx?c1=Surveillance&c2=Ki…

About $400 for the IP PoE NVR and two indoor/two outdoor cameras.

Yes, you'll have to find a reseller although there are heaps on-line or if you're in WA I should be able to get these through work. Kogan does versions of these although I've looked at them and they do not appear as solid.

The next tier up is the HIKVision stuff (And other brands in that "range"). $130-$200 per camera. These I would trust in a business environment.

Truly professional is more like your Vivotek, maybe even Geovision. These are the systems I've installed at critical real-time commercial premises. $400+ per camera.

    • Thanks for the reply. If in went IP, what could in get for around $50 per camera?

Are there apps to remote view on android? I got this system for $100 on special from Swann. It's part number DVR-1400.

Have you had a look at some of the cameras available on AliExpress? They seem pretty awesome.

  • What are you trying to improve? With my experience trying to get facial details and things like number plates involves expensive cameras and serious lighting.

I have a 9 camera Swann system.I upgraded from a 4 channel kit and the 9 channel came with a couple of these http://www.swann.com/au/swpro-842cam which are a little better than the standard ones. I wouldn't rely on it for fine details but they have proven good enough for insurance claim proof.

It all depends on what you are trying to achieve.

    • It's not for number plates or extreme detail, I'm just aiming for ok quality and some to look about 20m to my back fence.
