Heading to Singapore next week, need advice on Int'l Roaming prepaid sim

As per title

What's the best value roaming SIM to get if I'm heading to S'pore?

I don't need any data at all, but will require making phone calls to Malaysia and Australia landlines / mobiles. Rates as cheap as possible.

I currently have a globalsim which is quoting me $0.34 per min from S'pore to Aus and 35c per SMS.

  • Hi scrimshaw,

I normally buy a local pre paid sim card, normally get Singtel (http://info.singtel.com/personal/phones-plans/mobile/prepaid…)

Singtel gives the best reception in general, M1 is second best and i would avoid Starhub (they are like Vodafail)

If your calling Australia and Malaysia, why not use Skype/Viber? The $30 sim card gives you 7gb of data.

    • Singapore is so small… is there really a difference in reception?

      • There actually is a difference, though the difference is probably negligible or at the very least acceptable for most users.

Also remember that a huge part of Singapore is underground within the city and inner city areas as well, together with the train tracks/stations in these areas.

      • Yes there is a difference. Give you an example. Most of the time I find that my reception gets cut off when I'm on Starhub when I enter a lift. Same problem rarely happens on Singtel.

Secondly, network congestion. Try taking the MRT at peak hour and using your mobile internet. Starhub really struggles. I went from Bishan to Orchard MRT without being able to connect on Starhub. No problems with Singtel.

At the end of the day, it depends on which area you are at. Same as in Australia, some people swear by Telstra, some have better reception on others.

    • Thanks. A few of my friends mentioned M1. Probably will go with them.

  • +1

I was in Singapore December last year and both my partner and I used local sim cards to get data. I think we used Starhub as they had a better data deal. Previously I have used Singtel.
