Stainless Steel Refrigerator

Hi there, I am looking for a stainless steel fridge in Melbourne. Have to be more than 250L. Please let me know if anyone know any bargain around. Cheers

  • Only one nickel's worth of free advice from me re: fridges - be extremely wary of any fridge from Fisher & Paykel - my $1800 whizz-bang upside-down F&P is a POS, broke down about a month outta warranty, F&P almost laughed when I called them to see if there was anything they'd do!

Then my repair guy tells me they're mostly very badly designed, so he refuses to work on them but referred me on to a really great F&P guy, who, before I even told him the problem he surmised what was likely going wrong! Scary! Thankfully he was going on holidays and didn't have time to do the job, so he just told me how to fix it myself (told ya, really nice guy) so after a lengthy ring-around I tracked down the $90 proprietary F&P plastic fan (basically a slightly modified $10 computer fan - damn you F&P) and after a few hours disassembly/testing/reassembly the beast is clunking, rattling and knocking as it was when new!

Now, I'm deadly serious about this last part, these are the noisiest fridges I've ever seen, including those with ice-makers! First night I got it I thought someone was breaking into my house thru the kitchen, honest! The F&P dude told me this is a symptom of their poor design, water freezes in the rear duct, falls down (sounds just like an ice-maker too - one of my mates innocently asked me how to get to the icebox, that's how convincing it is) and blocks the fan from spinning quite frequently, eventually burning them out - thus those $90 fans become a consumable, at least every coupla years he reckons, if not annually!

So in short, talk to a repair guy first before deciding on any model, buy them a drink if need be - it'll be money well spent - they'll know which model F&Ps to avoid, and if any have been redesigned recently…however, the last ones I looked at still used the common (flawed) design! ;)

  • The Samsungs have a promo on at the moment with a free 22" LCD TV - have a look at:

    • Have to wonder if that 22" LCD is worth $300 let alone $699. Not sure about F&P but I have heard of their washing machines breaking down.

Can't say I know much about fridges, but what you can do is maybe print the following page and walk into a few stores and just ask them striaght up if they have one like this:

  • Thanks everyone!! Now looking for washer/dryer combo as well. Any suggestions?
