Tourist Refund Scheme GST Refund

I bought two laptops in a BOGOF promotion… On the receipt,

Laptop 1 $XXX.XX

Laptop 2 $0.00

So do I need to bring 1 only or both laptop out and back to aus?

Can I bring back items that claimed GST refund at airport?

  • Something to watch out for… when a purchase is over a certain amount they insist that the receipt show the buyers name/address etc. That site above explains it all and is a must read.

when a purchase is over a certain amount

$1000 and must show both name AND address

  • I bought my mom an iPhone 6plus out right from Move in high point Vic,
    Promotion made it cost $1049
I told them not to put any name on recipt so they didn't
Mom ended up getting $94.35 GST back.
They did see the phone though,

Also bought her an iPad of office works $540 with Myer $50 off and price beat 5%, iPad was already gone through baggage so she didn't get to claim gst on that. She advised we need to show customs at checkin and get a stamp of 'sighted goods' first.

Anything with an invoice of more than $300 can be claimed

    • iPad was already gone through baggage so she didn't get to claim gst on that.

You put a brand new iPad in checked luggage?? WOW

Anyway as others have said for purchases over $1000 need your name and address has to be on it. Given the iPhone was only $49 over they probably let it slide.

You might have met a happy customs officer. If you meet a by the book type you could be disappointed.
Best not to take the risk people… it is up to you.

  • I'm buying a macbook for $2.7k. can i claim GST when i leave the country and bring it back home?

    • yes, as long as you are travelling with 2 other people and they are not claiming anything

    • -2

Yes but you have a $900 limit when you come back to Australia. So I'd recommend not claiming the GST since you have to pay it back when you get home.

      • I don't really understand why I'm being negged…. Probably because I'm explaining the law.

You have a $900 limit of goods you can bring back duty free. If goods are over $900 you are meant to declare them. Given they would technically know you have claimed something over the limit and if you come back with the item they could do a "random" check if you have declared it or not. The fine for not declaring something is upwards of $450 so that plus the GST would be a lot more than just declaring the laptop and paying the GST back.

You can combine the limit together if you are in a family.

        • When you bring the item back, would it then be a used item ? thus worth less than the purchase price

        • +1

@geordie: Yes it would. So if you bought say a iPhone for $900 you could claim a couple of hundred of dollars in depreciation and be under the limit.

However if it was worth $2700 originally it might go down to $2500(after a couple of months - no idea what Macbook depreciation is like) thus still over the limit. The TRS works best for things like cameras or a iPad or something not a high end computer.

  • i have claimed GST on so many items and never brought them back a those were gifts.. including i phones and ipads..
No need for name.. but if has any name, it should be of the person who is traveling..
    hope this helps..
