Renting / Hiring a Car in Melb for Maybe a Week, What Options?

I have a friend visiting from overseas in September and I've not got a car. I live close to the city but for around 1 week it would be nice to not use PT.

I know there's those flexicars which can be used for just groceries and trips, what have you but I don't know how good they would be say for a great ocean road drive or seeing the penguin things down the South East. (I think they are by the hour bookings too?)

I rented a car in NZ which cost about $600 or so (with a big deposit and a really big insurance cost too, like 1/3 of the cost) but that was a decade ago. Anyone know what options there are for a vehicle? Even if it's only 4 days or something? I'd like no limit on the KMs or very very reasonably priced if you do several hundred KMs.

Thoughts (and thanks)

  • I've hired car with Budget Car rental, personally i think they're really reasonable.

    7 days @$28 per day($196) plus excess insurance https://www.acerentalcars.com.au/inet/webinterface.php?step=…
I have used this crowd before and had no problems. As for excess insurance i used Australia Post domestic travel insurance roughly $6 per day or $90 per year.

    • Hey thanks dude, that seems quite good - how do you manage to tie the Aus Post travel insurance in with it? I'm actually based in Melbourne myself.

I take it no kilometer limit with them? Seems $50 a day at very most really with all coverage, that seems quite reasonable - don't need a beast car.

You don't need to tie it at all just tell them you have alternative excess insurance. Just found this post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/187859 for an additional 15% off using code AUTUMN15 until 30th june posted by whodidthat. This would bring your car hire down to $166.60 plus insurance approx. $49 total cost approx. $215.60 or $30.80 per day.Make sure you place your order early as prices seem to go up closer to the date.

        • Awesome stuff, definitely seems fairly reasonable - thank you.

    • Have you seen this also? Is this a good deal, $19 a day? http://www.kayak.com/cars/MEL-a13998/2015-09-18/2015-09-25

      • Not bad the $19 is US dollars thou, if you go thru to the next page it converts to $23 Australian still better than Aces price of $28 if no coupon code is available for september.

    • Ended up using these guys, appreciate it - booking made. Damn cheap

  • Rent a Bomb is pretty alright…been using them a lot for work lately.

They have small cars (new fleet, not the busted up old ones that I hire) for around $40 a day, excess reduction is $8.80, 120km per day allowance, and they prolly have week-long rates if you talk to them.

    Bond is $300.

I use the real bomb cars, which are around $30-$35 a day, unlimited km within the metro area (50km radius, I can get to Bacchus Marsh in that). Probably alright if you're sticking around the city, they drive better than I expected and I can recommend the old bombs, for sure. Good luck :)

    • Look don't quote me on this but the guy above you seems to be paying less money, so maybe… I dunno you can switch to them?
That being said if that somehow falls through or has some fine print excess fee I'll consider rent a bomb (they need to change the name, I always assume the bastard things will break down)
