I don't recognise it as being edible. Looks a bit like an acorn from an Oak tree, which pigs like. Best to post photos of the tree and the leaf to be sure.

    • Yep, looks exactly like an acorn to me. Not edible. Place in dirt, water and grow your own oak tree. I find they grow almost without fail if tended.

  • Looks like a chestnut

  • Chestnuts are round and flatter.

  • where did you find them?

Plant it in your garden, water and wait. Then you'll know!

Seriously though, looks like an acorn.

  • The shell looks a lot like a long hazelnut to me. http://www.yalcafruittrees.com.au/wp-content/uploads/Lambert… You can do a Google image search by dropping a picture into the search page and it will show a bunch of visually similar items. Just try a number of photos of a single nut from different angles. https://images.google.com.au/ click on the camera icon and drag and drop a jpeg of your nut.

A hazelnut looks like a small chestnut. This still looks like an acorn. Need to see a leaf if possible.

    Look at the 13th photo … http://www.eattheweeds.com/acorns-the-inside-story/

  • I'm pretty certain its an acorn. It is not edible so please don't try to eat it. CORRECTION: it might be edible but its nasty.. I would not eat it ;)

Definately not a walnut or a hazelnut. Walnut shells are much larger and hazelnut shells are shaped quite differently. Chestnut shells are spikey.

The plants were common some years ago on streets (planted by the councils) Not sure why given they can't be eaten and just create a mess to clean up.

Note: acorns usually have a part like a hat on top but only when on the plant. What you have seems to be an older one that's fallen off a while ago.

  • You can actually eat them under very controlled circumstances, just do the research.

    • The main control being, we are living through a war or other extreme famine and we will die if we don't find some calories, no matter how laborious to process and how nasty the taste.
Luckily, things haven't been that grim in oz since the 1930s and maybe not even then.

  • Agree. Looks like an acorn that has lost its top. See Google Images.

You'll often see squirrels in North America going around and collecting these. They eat them. Can't say I've ever tried them but I don't think they'd be very nice to eat.

    • usually very bitter I believe.. But anna10 is correct possible to consume, but consumable and actually nice eat are two different things. Googling reveals they may have been consumed by Native Americas, not sure if those plants are related to the ones found around here.

  • i see it does look very similar to an acorn, there's a few large trees along my streets and they're dropping down like nuts !

You need to consult a squirrel. Renowned for their expertise. Get one in on a 457 Visa.

      Me no squirrel, oringal.

Looks tasty. Eat it. Post back if not dead.

I would gnaw off my own leg just to watch wild squirrels up close like this every day

        SQUIRRELSSSSSSSS <3

(ninja edit - I pasted the wrong video.. it's a slippery slope on Youtube.. first you're dying of cute watching squirrels, the next you're actually laughing out loud at chipmunks.. same leg-gnawing-off would apply just to be surrounded by those, too)

        • Favourited.

Poor little bastard (or bastardess) is having a tough time of it, but that is just BEYOND cute.
I am watching it again, NOW!

          Thanks, turnip.

        • Courtesy of a clicked like by someone I'm subbed to… They have good musical taste, though rarely/never put chipmunk videos in my feed. Posted in Feb, but apparently (?) just went viral-ish. Blaming Gangnam and Charlie's chomped-on finger - I actually do reckon that < 3mil views is only ish at this point.

I'm guessing that you've already seen it, but just on the offchance..
Other significant cuteness on the poster's channel.

I personally love a stretch in the morning (and in the middle of the day at the moment), but this is just ridiculous!

  • It looks like an English Oak acorn. It is actually edible, but you would need to be desperate. You could try acorn flour.
