Building First Computer

Hello I am building my first computer I'm hoping it will last me a long time and will be able to run beefy or demanding programs. What I have so far is:

Graphics Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 G1 Gaming 4GB
Processor: Intel Core i7 4790K
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 Motherboard
Case: CoolerMaster CM690 III Mid Tower Case

I have had trouble deciding on the rest of the parts, any recommendations for the other parts or changes that I should make would be appreciated the case comes with 2 fans and I'm aiming for a budget or around $1500 give or take $300.

Thanks in advance

My favourite page when choosing PC parts: http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/rmp_sg_whirlpoolpcs

Sounds like you want a gaming config: http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/rmp_sg_whirlpoolpcs_gaming_conf…

The first page also links out to PCPartPicker and StaticIce, 2 more good sites for PC building.

Another good place to ask - http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc

    • Thanks for the tips they were a great help with picking parts that were more suited to my price range and needs.

Just an opinion, if you do not want to overclock, or don't know how to… don't get a K chip… you can also save money by not getting a third party cooler. The cooler that comes with the chip will keep your chip cool enough if you don't overclock.

    • I decided to go with the i5-4690 instead and got the regular chip thanks.

If this is your first home-brew PC, I might suggest you change the CPU to an i5-4690.. It's about $160 cheaper and for gaming, I don't believe you get much benefit out of the hyper threading that the i7 gives you.. And it's probably unnecessary to buy an overclocker's CPU (the K bit) if it's your first time round..

Do yourself a favour and get an SSD. Even if you have a large mechanical drive for bulk storage, it will feel much nicer to use.

IMO, the case is as ugly as sin. BitFenix have some nice looking cases, and Corsair have some grill type cases that are more understated. There is so much choice there :)

    • ^ great advice here. i5 vs i7, SSD, BitFenix cases. All good.

The i7 is not just overkill for gaming, but it may also be overkill for your graphics card. The exception might be if you are heavily into CPU bound games like Civilisation and Total War.

I think http://www.logicalincrements.com/ is a good resource to help you get a balanced config.

Free advice: get 8GB of RAM in 2 4GB units. 16GB is overkill for now.

    • Thanks for the advice :)

    • Thanks so much I decided to go with the chip you recommended as well as a bitfenix case, the shinobi, their cases are great and I liked the simple and pretty look of the white one, I also ordered an SSD thanks for the advice.

If possible, you might want to wait for next year. Nvidia's Pascal GPUs look like they'll be a huge step up from the current generation.
