Any Value in "Compare" Sites?

Got an unsolicited email from a crowd Comparethemarket.com.au offering to find me the best savings in health insurance plus a $100 eftpos card free. Currently unimpressed with the rebates I am receiving from my Medibank policy (eg for dental) I thought I should find out who this crowd are. It turns out that there are about a dozen such comparison services.
Any Ozbargainers have experiences to report, good or bad, with any of these "Compare" sites?

I used a compare website once … been getting spam and telemarketting phone calls ever since AND the prices they quotes were inflated to what I could get if I went the company directly. They only offer websites they get kickbacks from, they dont offer all of the competition. There is a few legit ones out there but I'll never use iSelect again

I just random details in those compare sites because I know they will spam the hell out of my like iSelect

  • The only comparison site worth the time that I've come across is NSW government's greenslip comparison site: http://prices.maa.nsw.gov.au/

Visit government compare sites first if available (I know vic has an electricity one) since others only list ones that they can get comission from.

    Edit: http://www.privatehealth.gov.au/dynamic/compare.aspx

  • They're so full of vested interest or they are limited. iSelect for example doesn't have all of the major funds so you never really know if they have given you the best deal. Or look at the posts on OzBargain from creditcardfinder their version of 'deals' is terrible in comparison to what is really out there.

unless its a .gov.au website I avoid them and prefer to research via forums and direct websites.

Bur if you must use one then do not give any real inforamtion or the spam will never stop…I'm talking to you iSelect
