+1 Harvey Norman, -1 JB Hifi

So today I went into JB to purchase a Surface Pro 3.

Employee #1: Can't price match because it's below our cost-price, I'd have to speak to our manager.
Now I'm fine with that, if the manager still says no then oh well I'll give my money to Harvey Norman.
So I went around inspecting other laptops and alternatives and finally decided to purchase the Surface Pro. But I couldn't find Employee #1 so I asked another…

Employee #2: Nah we can't go below cost price and I'll save you both our time and your time and not call the manager.
I insisted on seeing manager but he refused to cooperate.

So I spoke to the Microsoft person and they told me that the price they had was the best that they could offer and most likely wouldn't go below.
So I left and bought at Harvey Norman for cheaper! HN also gave me a discount on the keyboard, despite JB telling me that they wouldn't be able to give me a discount.

Note that JB offers 2 years warranty but HN offers only 1 year.

HN: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/computers-tablets/ipads-surfa…

TL;DR
JB wouldn't price match or negotiate, bought from HN instead.
JB staff were fairly uncooperative and don't uphold their price match that well… Considering that HN is a brick store.

From my brand new Surface Pro 3 :)

So are we going to pretend like Windows Vista never happened?

The warranty also covers the keyboard when purchased on the same invoice as the Surface. Otherwise buy it separately and the warranty on the KB will only be somewhat 3months.

    • No, MS support for keyboard goes for 2 years as far as I know and as far as my warranty page says, well at least the hardware warranty goes for 2 years.

Surface Type Cover V2 (I bought it on 2014)
      Technical support expired: 20/08/2014
      Hardware warranty expires: 21/05/2016

Are you sure they are BS'ing you?
It clearly says on JB website under the details tab that it is 1 year warranty.

If you decide to buy from JB Hifi because of the 2 year warranty, make sure you get that written on your receipt or else they may fail to honour it.

I got 2 Surface Pro and 1 Surface Pro 2 before, I can confirm that Microsoft offer 2 years of warranty, just register your product on Microsoft site and when you log in with your Microsoft account (either hotmail, outlook, etc), you will see the warranty period which is at least 24 months, i'm not sure but probably 26 months

    Cool story.

My surface pro came with 2 yrs warranty offered from MS. Bought from JB but I doubt its JB that is extending it.

  • Update: Yes I was told by a fellow user on the deal that microsoft provides 2 year warranty. So WIN for me! :D
Thanks to @dtnvong as well :)

  • Either way, your device is protected under ACL for probably longer than the 2 year warranty anyway. Definitely longer than 1 year, so if you had any issues you needn't stress :)

    Congrats on Surface Pro 3!

    Sent from iPad

    • hahaha nice (Y)
iPads are great! I love them too and I think there will always be a place in my heart for one. Now owning the Surface Pro 3, I do miss the smaller form factor, light weight and some apps. Surface Pro 3 is more practical due to the nature of my uni degree

  • JB staff were fairly uncooperative and don't uphold their price match that well

They don't have a price match policy TO uphold.

  • I went to JB Hifi today at Chermside (QLD) shopping centre, and had a good experience.

There was a Microsoft guy there who gave me heaps of advice on the tablet and using Win 8.

Then I got the attention of a store employee who helped me out further and offered a $20 discount on the tablet and keyboard cover without being asked. When I told him it was cheaper at Harvey Norman, he said that they're not able to discount the tablet, so he took more off the keyboard and beat their price by $3. I was happy 'cause I didn't have to deal with Hardly Normal and came home with a shiny new tablet today.

$1,514 in total for the Surface Pro 3 i5 256Gb model and keyboard cover.
