Best Streaming Device for Xbmc and Netflix

hi all,

Just wondering what is the best streaming device? especially for xbmc and netflix

I was using Chromecast for a while and I was happy with it. Now got jailbroken Apple TV 2 which is not bad after using for couple of days. I dont understand why people willing to pay +$200 for it while they can buy android box which much cheaper.

so help me out if I should keep the ATV2, the chromecast, or both. or maybe buy something different? like this one

  • If you already have Jailbroken Apple TV I would keep it. I agree it is not worth $200+.

I have a Raspberry Pi running XBMC (Kodi) and it is brilliant, easily set up and works via HDMI CEC using my TV remote. Pi cost me $45 including SD card and sits hidden behind the TV. I also have an Apple TV 3 to stream Netflix. I know many really enjoy the Chromecast but I don't like the idea of using my Phone/ iPad to stream content, I would prefer to have a remote and choose what I want direct on the TV. You can still Airplay using XBMC but I find it is not as good as Apple TV.

My vote is to keep your Apple TV running XBMC and also use it to stream Netflix.

you don't use the ipohone/ipad to stream anything it's merely a remote control for the chromecast you clock what you want to watch and it sends to url to chromecast and it does the rest.

Correct. With the chromecast your phone is just the remote.

The chromecast streams directly from the source, in a way it's just like an apple tv

Ditch XBMC and get Plex instead.
    Keep the Chromecast.

  • I got an XIII android media media player and loaded Kodi, (new version of XBMC) and it also still has XBMC as that came out of the box. cost me $120, and you can run other things on it like VLC which is rich in codecs, or torrent clients so you you save power when downloading non-copyrighted material from slow peers (9W for media player vs 200W for PC).
The apple TV never gets used anymore, and can't see myself buying a chrome cast now, my Apple TV isn't Jail broken, if it was it might be more useful, but it's a time thing.
The XIII also does netflix, and you can hand a drive off the USB. It came with an air mouse remote.
Also a whole generation of Intel based units now but they are $180 though they dual boot, Windows 8.1 or Android. I also got a Chuwi Vi8 tablet, it's intel dual boots and has a micro HDMI for the TV, but the TV only seems to work for the Android boot which as has koi and netflix. Nice thing is I can watch it on the train, come home and finish watching on the TV.

I like the XIII next though, small low power.

    • yes these addons easy to find and install and will be the same for all devices that support xbmc (kodi), there are couples of youtube videos show you what to do. Its depends on the device you have and your internet connection. some devices lags more than the others. but in general its easy to use.
