Take away price vs dine-in price

I order these in a Thai restaurant in Clayton.
Sum Tum Thai $19.90 take away price $17.90…..$2 difference.
Green Curry $22.90 TA price $16.90……..$6 difference.
Saam Rod (3 flavour sauce) $28.90 TA price $21.90…..$7 difference.
Coconut rice $4 TA price $4
Rice x2 $3x2=$6 TA price $3
Dine in price total: $81.70
Take away price: $66.70

The dine in menu doesn't state dine in mark up or any kind of surcharge.
I ask to speak to the manager and would like their explanation to the difference in these price, they told me they can do that.
Has anyone had similar experience? Is it legal for them to do this?

  • I don't know if it is legal or not but I did see some places in Sydney that charged extra for dine in when I lived there. One place that come to mind is El Jannah in Granville.

    • El Jannah does it everywhere, its like double the price and you get leb bread.

  • I know Lindt does that, at least they state in their menu. This restaurant though so inconsistent with their mark up.
I only found out the price difference when we finish with the meal, I mention the price and my friend said that's not the price.
He was given the menu at the table, I took the take away menu as I walk in and use that to order.

thats why i hate people like you, u have no emphaty for others. they work long hours, provide you service, clean the dishes, wash table cloth, do the floor because you made a mess like all the others. and therefore, they probably spend another 30 mins just to clean up your mess! so and you complaint here! if u cant afford it, stay home and cook!

is there a reason you would think this would be illegal ?
i know a few places that do this.

Why are you surprised? Obviously, when you dine in you use the services of a waiter/waitress who needs to be paid, you can ask for free water in a jug/glass, use the toilet facilities as required (which need to be maintained), you use their crockery/cutlery (which then needs to be cleaned), you take up physical space (which needs to be rented, insured, etc.), you use their heating (or cooling) while you dine (which they of course have to pay for)…

All of that costs them money. Of course it is legal for them to charge the customers who don't use any of these additional services less money, if they just pick up the food and leave.

  • they are just offering a delivery hero discount up front. nothing wrong with that

I understand the mark up with dine-in, why is some item mark up more than other item, some massively different. Shouldn't the mark up be in a certain percentage?

    • +2

Why would the mark up have to be a certain percentage? It's a free market, the merchant can decide what to charge. You can decide to buy or not.

Have you been living in a cave? GK has explained it well. Why would it be illegal? When you take away you are not paying for the restaurant service, just the kitchen service, so a different set of prices apply.

  • Where's my elephant???

    Ok fair enough, just asking

  • +1

The dine in price is the basic price and the TA price is discounted because it saves them some costs. If you look at it like that it may ease your day.

  • +2

In most cases you may even get a bigger serving while eating in!

  • When you sat down at the table? Didn't they give you a menu?

You stupid person. How can you possibly berate a restaurant who charges more to dine in than takeaway? Obviously they have overheads to pay for - such as service, utilities & the cost of spending time in their facility - they are not a charity , it is a business.

    • +2

How is it stupid to ask questions? I just didn't understand why some mark up are more some are less, I thought it should be more consistent

      • To most people it would be obvious that to dine in would cost more than to pay & take away. I apologize for berating you as stupid - but still stand by my comments that we should all know there are 2 different charges, & rightly so - Pay to utilize all the restaurants facilities or place an order for a takeaway to save a bit.

      You stupid person.

How does rudeness add to the discussion? The reasons for the price difference may seem obvious to many, but there's no need or excuse for insults.

I too have noticed that. Especially with coffee shops. $4.50 for an almond croissant takeaway or $5 if you eat-in. Same with their cupcakes, cakes and pies.

It just costs them more if you eat in. They have to wash their dishes and stuff.

Best to takeaway if you're trying to save some dosh also, and just eat out less.

Being a cupcake, you would save not buying those. :)

    • It just costs them more if you eat in. They have to wash their dishes and stuff.

"I brought my own paper plate and plastic utensils - surely I can dine in at take-away price?"

-said the OzBargainer with the now blackened eye.

  • same places charge you the same price both ta and dine in. but if you want to take away leftover they charge you for the plastic boxes

  • Usually an extra 30c for the takeaway box. It can be waived if you know their native tongue.

  • My local Chinese is actually the opposite lol. They charge $2 extra on their lunch specials if you get it take away.
