What's your limit as an OzBargainer?

So I just wanted to start a discussion on what everyone's limit is with regards to being an Ozbargainer - so saving money, being cheap, being a tight arse, enjoying freebies or whatever floats your boat. This is more in relation to deals on Ozbargain than in general life. And no, broden doesn't count.

For me, I think I'm reaching my limit with the Delivery Hero deals - there's only so much Indian, Thai and Pizza I can eat and I'm craving homemade food now without all the salt and fat. Since Easter Tuesday, I've managed to get onto 10 out of the 11 deals (missed the one on the day when it expired in 25 minutes). Also interesting is I've spent ~$200-250 over those 10 Delivery Hero deal days which has actually pushed my usual food budget up substantially (I reckon $6-10 dinner homemade) but it's the savings that count right? I've saved ~$150 with the help of OzBargain, Delivery Hero and most importantly, all the members who posted these deals!

So what's your OzBargain limit?

  • If i can get something cheap/free i'll do it unless it's something i really don't care for.

Like what i did last week i wanted a cheap 4G modem so i bought 4 Huawei Ascend Y550 from Harvey Norman kept 1 and sold 3 to CEX for $60 each = Free phone. :P

    • Why would they pay you more for a phone than they could buy it from Harvey Norman for?

      • They have done this before. I think HN will only sell in retail quantities, so CEX will buy them from punters for slightly more, then sell them in a week or two when the price at HN is back to normal.

      • No idea all i know is i got a free phone.

        • Do you have to post them the phones/ wait for them to approve their condition etc.; i.e. does it take a while, or what?

        • @GnarlyKnuckles: Walk in they book them for a test takes 30 min you come back sign a couple things they hand you cash.

        • @holden93:
Awww, I just checked their locations and evidently they only have shops in NSW and the ACT… But I must say, that's a brilliant wee scheme you pulled off there! The hat's off!

        • @GnarlyKnuckles: Ive bought quite a bit of used phones off ebay aswell and sell there.
ive made quite a bit from nothing.
you wouldnt belive some of the bargains ive got off ebay.
Last week end i bought a Galaxy Note 4 off a local facebook buy and sell group fort $400 sol to CEX the same day for $465 lol easy profit.

How do you measure a limit?

I don't think I have any limit, I just practise discretion. Is it still worth my dollars, even though it's cheap?

I have seen too many people just accumulate clutter in their house, of stuff they bought mostly because it was cheap. For those people it seems the limit is how much stuff they can hoarde in their house/shed.

If you buy something at 90% off and you didn't need it and it stays in your cupboard until it becomes obsolete then you still wasted money, time and effort. The food that goes off in the back of your pantry/fridge/freezer is wasted time, money and effort too.

But fortunately with things like Udemy courses there is no physical limitation. You can just keep accumulating courses you never finish without there being any physical clutter that becomes a liability.

"If you buy something at 90% off and you didn't need it and it stays in your cupboard until it becomes obsolete then you still wasted money, time and effort."

You've stated this really well/concisely i-choice, and it took me a while to learn this lesson. These days, if I come across a really cheap deal (90% off or better), I only buy up big if I know that a few of my friends/family will appreciate/actually use the item/s too, which I then try to distribute among those who want one (or more) within the week. This system seems to work well, as I don't end up storing stuff until it's obsolete, and I've been on the receiving end of some 'returned favours/scores' as a result of sharing the bargains I've scored.

  • Do I need it or do I want it?
If I need it, do I need it in that amount/will I use it before expiry/will it do the job well?
If I want it, is it something I've wanted for a while or would I not buy it if it weren't for the bargain price? Do I want it enough that I would pay full price if I had to?

It hurts when I pay RRP.

Well Poisonkiller - what you're initially doing is wasting money on eating out every day/night. Cook your own nutricious food for a fraction of the price - saving you heaps. Doesn't have to take long to throw a good meal together. Then look at the savings you have made to spend on something else more worthwhile as opposed to lining a restaurants pockets with your money, for food that can often be a disappointment - that ends up deposited down your toilet. At least when you have cooked it far cheaper than buying it then you won't mind seeing the remainder flushed away once it has passed through your system!! Don't Poo-Poo my comments please, send any crap negs or other shit.
