Is it a good/bad idea to buy secondhand expensive kitchen appliances - kitchenaid, vitamix etc?

Do you think there's a risk of motors being burnt out or something? Parts having being replaced with cheap parts?

I think its a risk but not so likely.

Interested in your thoughts and experiences before I decide.

Honestly, never thought about buying second hand kitchen appliances.

    • Nor had I, but I need to replace some and considering second hand for some, eg vitamix is around $1000 new.

  • It is a risk. But the potential savings are great. Buy if you have a chance to see them working.

its like buying a 2nd hand computer or car even

you can get exceptional value or you can get absolute lemons

  • Depends how cheap you can get it considering you really don't know how they were treated and how old it really is..

  • Only if it still had a warranty. My policy is the same for a second hand car unless it is a classic…

Have bought a lot of appliances 2nd hand - always see them working & have ( touch wood ) never had a problem.
My latest purchase has been an old Kenwood Chef Food Mixer - tried for ages on EBay on auctions but lost out as they are very collectible. Then found one on Gumtree, under another catergory, & the bonus was that the seller only lived a few kms. from us which immediately solved the expense of postage !
The mixer has been well cared for & works beautifully. ( One persons trash is another persons treasure )
Obviously when purchasing you cannot expect to find the product in showroom condition - that is reflected in the 2nd hand asking price. However by reading the ad. well, asking the correct questions to the seller - you will soon gain whether it is of interest to you. Follow this up with a visit & you shouldn't be disappointed as all relevant questions have already been asked & answered. = Happy seller & Happy purchaser. Good Luck.

  • From my experience with an semi expensive slow juicer - hurom for $350-$400. It is worth the money if you use it and take care of it. Whether it breaks or not, 85% depends on the user. If you muck around with it too much too often, it will break. If you use it properly it will last.

Commercial grade equipment are designed to overcome misuse and last for the length the warranty under tough circumstances.

An almost basic vitamix is selling for around $750 at costco. It is one grade above the lowest grade.

Research, research, research on the model you like. See what potential faults it could have based on real hand experience. Weigh that up against how much you can save (cost-benefit analysis).
