Xperia Z... to which 5" phone to replace?

Hi Team,

I am upgrading my old Z, i love it! Its an amazing phone but now im upgrading.
I like the look of the Z3, but i find the 5.2" is just too big. My partner has the Z3 Compact which is great, but at 4.7" it feels slightly too small. So im here to find out if there is anything similar to the Z. I can wait a few months if there is something else coming out, but as far as i can see the Z3 compact is my best choice.

Thanks.

    Did you try the Z3 out in store? Z and Z3 have almost the same size despite the screen size difference. (Z: 139.00 x 71.00 x 7.90 vs Z3: 146.50 x 72.00 x 7.30)

    • Yeh i did in the Telstra shop, it just felt that much bigger. I know its half a cm, but that feels so big in my pocket!

I dont mind the width that doesnt bother me, im just scared ill regret buying the 4.7" Z3 compact!
I saw the specs for the Z4, which doesnt impress me, hence the Z3 would be a better upgrade.

I just upgraded from an XZ to a Z3. It only arrived this morning so I haven't been able to use it.

Ironically, my XZ died on Friday when I rode home in Brisbane during that rain storm. The XZ seals are just rubbish. The Z3 is way better designed from a waterproof perspective though. The XZ lacked the mag charge port so the USB port was always being opened for me, plus the headphone port on the XZ was flapped. I'd already replaced the flaps on my XZ prior due to noticeable seal breakages just through normal use, but I didn't notice it had occurred again on it, hence I wasn't too worried riding in the rain.

But gee that storm Friday was apocalyptic. I should have figured something was wrong when I didn't see another bike or pedestrian. I was riding through axle deep water for about a km…

        • BTW, I've had time with my XZ3 and honestly, it is the same width and thickness more or less (the XZ is slightly fatter), but the Z3 is about half a cm taller. Coming direct from an XZ, I'm not sure why you'd find the Z3 too big.

I'm finding lollipop harder to deal with. Especially the over-complicated notifications AND interruptions management. I'm getting these annoying sound interruptions when say I drop out of wifi pairing mode range. I can't figure how to disable them.

Thanks for that info, i had another play with it today, and i think on the Z3 the sides are curved o it adds those extra mm. I was looking at the S6, as its .1" smaller haha thats how much it worries me, but i lose the basic waterproofing that i like.

          Still un decided….

Did you have your XZ with you when you compared? The physical dimensions of the two

          Z3 146 x 72 x 7.3 mm
          XZ 139 x 71 x 7.9 mm

So 1mm wider, but rounded rather than square, but thinner, and 7mm taller. And a screen .2" bigger.

I'm really liking it but am finding it so slippery I'm gonna have to get a case just so it doesn't slide off stuff or slip out my hands. I was listening to an audiobook on loudspeaker on it, and it was floating on a benchtop like an air-hockey puck… I was just going to stick with a pouch for my phone this time so I could dock it, but the physical phone is a slippery little eel. I've been looking for back plate stickers with no real luck

Yeh i put my Z over the top and i think its the roundedness that gives it a different profile and it seems much bigger than it really is.
          Im thinking the S6????????

        • @XCelR8:

Big price difference for the s6 unless on contract. I paid 543 for my z3.

And if you don't mind touchwiz

          @XCelR8:
If you want battery life and SD card expandability… Z3 is a better choice than the S6… a lot better.

        • @clse945111:

          Yeah, definitely.

Form factor though, the S6 is about an exact match to the original XZ

I'd take the extra 1mm width and 7mm height though… Well, I already have actually :)

        • @Mobe1969:

Thanks guys, will be looking at the Z3 again, i love battery life, can still get 2 days out of my Z if i hardly use it.

  • I m still rocking my xperia Z bought during 20% ebay sale and loaded it with latest custom Lollipop ROM.

Yep awesome phone hey! Absolutely love it!
EDIT: I dont want to have to reset my phone and lose all my data for Lollipop :S

Err, where's the leak in that link? Just sounds like pure speculation.

the Z and Z2 are nearly identical in size - I have a Z2, had a Z1, and my sister has a Z. Z3 is ever so slightly thinner.

otherwise if you want a phone with a slightly smaller footprint, have a look at the HTC One M8. Really not much smaller (if at all) in real life than the Z2, though.

LOL, no one should take that seriously…

  • There is only one correct answer.
