Trying to Decide Internet Provider. NetComm NB604N Modem or $0 Connection Fee?

I am trying to decide between
Internode and Dodo $60 plans.

Internode offers a free NetComm NB604N modem, with $79 connection fee (on a 24 month plan).
Dodo offers a $0 connection fee, but no free modem (on a 24 month plan).

What is the free modem offered by internode like? Which one would you go with if quota wasn't an issue for you?

If you can find an office works with stock for the same price as their website then you can save some cash.

    • Wow! That is cheap. Thanks so much for that. Would you recommend this modem? If I was to go with Dodo and had to buy my own modem, should I get a better modem or would this one do?

      • I have never used it sorry. i was only searching for cheapest price this modem was to try and answer your question.

      • It sounds like it probably OK. Like most things it has spotty reviews:

[4/5] The user interface could be better. I use it in bridge mode and so far so good. Broadcom chip and SNR tweakable using telnet to access the CLI interface. Download improved from 550 KB/s to 680 KB/s. SYNC speed appears lower but does not affect the actual speed you get.
[1/5] Never works properly. I frequently crash. This never happened with other brands.
[5/5] provides everything i need. cant ask for more.

You could go cheaper and get a similar $21.55 Belkin N300 modem from officeworks. Cheaper again would be to grab a friends old modem.

I'm going for Billion 8800AXL. Good brand, easily configurable. Support for Gigabit ethernet and AC wireless, so good for setting up a fast LAN, and could reduce battery drain on the next generation of phones. OTOH it costs about $150, and may be overkill if you are just buying it to share an old ADSL2+ connection with a couple of PCs and phones. The 8800AXL has some features to tweak the ADSL sync speed but it can't magically turn copper into fibre, so if you aren't setting up a local server on your LAN I don't know how much it would really help.

      • I have the Archer D9 router, it's expensive but it's got more features than you can shake a stick at.

My brother has the Archer D7, again slightly on the higher end at $150ish but cannot fault it's wireless stability.

Personally, I'd go Internode over Dodo. I'd also tell Internode the offer that Dodo has, and ask them to offer a $0 connection fee (don't mention modem), if they say it's because of the modem, then I'd say I have my own and don't need a second.

  • Try finding this modem at office works - was on special at greenacre office works for $55

It will probably be better than any ISP modem
Edit: This modem router has 2 USB ports, VIOP, and gigabit LAN

  • Thank you all.

Silly question, but will any modem work if I keep it in a tv unit (solid doors/not glass)?

There's no airflow in a TV cabinet. Leave it out in the open so that it doesn't overheat in the summer months.

Wood cabinets barely affects wifi performance though if that is what you are concerned about
