Hobby Career in Drone Photography/Videography?

Hi all,

I'm very tempted to buy a drone, always wanted something like this since I was a boy. However, I just can't seem to convince the Mrs to let me spend $2k on a "toy" purely for fun, which is understandable with kid coming up.

Just wondering anyone out there manage to make some part time/hobby career out of drone photography/videography? Not talking about big money or a life changing career, but just something which pay for those photography or video? At least that way I can justify to my missus of the purchase LOL. Just like some camera enthusiast able to get some part time job in shooting some pictures for cars & wedding etc…maybe real estate will pay for people to take pics on their behalf?

Love to hear from experienced drone pro out there. Cheers!

  • You need to be a certified remote pilot to make commercial gain flying a drone; check out the info provided by RPAS Training

    • Thanks..thought I would require some sort of licence..

Wonder how much it would be? Would they be enough demand out there? at least to break even drone purchase

      • Looks like a minimum of $3300 on the website I linked earlier; that plus the drone you buy, so probably in the region of $5500 all up.

        • +insurance +camera if you havent factored that into your costs.

  • Are you a pro videographer or have a solid background in photography? If not, the quality of the footage you would get will be the same as the thousands of shaky videos already on youtube. The idea of the part-time photographer making some money on the side is a myth.

Get an early generation DJI Phantom, they are available for around $500-$600, they are super fun and it's not so bad when you crash a $500 quad rather than the $2k pro models.

    my 2c

    • Definitely not pro in videography & photography..only got point and shoot camera LOL. Pretty good at remote control stuff though.

What makes you said making money on the side is a myth? You got some truth to back it up? or just assumption?

Look, I don't even mind getting a licence if there's job demand for aerial photography out there. I'm even willing to even spend up to 4k on the DJI inspire which give far far superior video quality if demand is out there. Put it simple, don't mind spending money if could be more than just hobby…

      • Not knocking your idea, but I have to say anyone and everyone who has considered drone video, or stills for their websites or promo material is now thinking - "hmm perhaps we can shoot this ourselves" - hence most of your potential customers just evaporated. The company I work for spends money annually on aerial stills of our projects which usually come in $700-900 per shot, I don't this will be happening anymore.

  • Ok I give up guys after factoring all the opinions..I'll just have to pray hard one of the model of DJI on really good sale here on ozbargain..

    • Get yourself a cheap indoor drone from china. They are great fun and endless entertainment terrorizing the family pets!

This is the one I started with: http://www.banggood.com/New-Version-Upgraded-Hubsan-X4-V2-H1…

      • Nah, got too many indoor remote heli

I only want drone with live video feed capability, or else it's just like another remote flying heli..
