Share Your Water Bill with Us

I opened up my latest water bill and I am rather chuffed with myself.

One person
Quarterly billing $20.25
Average daily cost 22 cents
Average daily water use 56L (56L per day per person)

Interestingly the average water use per person in my post code (3004) is a massive 325L which is nearly SIX times my usage.
Honestly I cannot imagine using twice, let alone six times the amount of water I currently do.

Now, I'm not a slob. I shower every day, often twice, I have a swish Fisher and Paykel Front Loader which I feel I give a good workout every couple of days and I do my dishes twice a week in a dishwasher. I don't really have any water saving stuff.

I'm really hoping for a sub $20 bill next quarter.

Now it's your turn to share your bill.

  • That sounds strangely cheap.. Mine was ~$80 for just hot water and i run a shower 6/7 days a week, a wash or 2 every weekend and then hot water for dishes in a sink 2 times a week. Just myself in a studio apartment.

Hey slob, how about flushing that toilet some time? ;)

Probably could do with a shower too.

When Sunshine Coast had rations a couple of years ago they were expected to meet 55 l per person - you're not there yet Drew. lol

Our water bill is usually zero, tank water only.

    • 55L a day???

      Very unrealistic target.

In Vic, our target was a realistic 150L per person per day.

  • 102 litres a day for me, $40 a quarter in my last bill, though 150 litres a day is more typical.
With an extra $150 a quarter in access charges.

From a cost point of view water consumption has little effect on my bill, so I'm all for long showers

  • $250/quarter. Carer for a disabled incontinent person and 4 people in the house. Lots of washing :/

  • Share the bill? I can give you my bill.

  • My bill arrived yesterday and it is $500. There are two of us, and we had some visitors for some of the time.

We shower one, maybe twice a day. We run the new Bosch dishwasher twice or three times a week, hardly ever water the garden.

I think I'm going to do a leak test overnight because this is crazy.

I think when my girlfriend showers when I'm not home it's on full bore and more than half an hour… I'm yet to catch her though.

Our last few bills have been under $300

    • Doesn't sound right, unless it was the visitors.

When you leave in the morning, check the water meter and then check it again when you arrive home in the evening. If it changes, you have a leak somewhere.

Do you have water efficient shower heads?

      • No, we don't have water saving shower heads

        • You'll halve your water usage in the shower if you use water saving shower heads.

30 min shower may reduce from say 600L to 270L.

I think there is a program to swap your showerhead for free.

  • Mine's about $200 per 60 days..

    Actual water usage is ~$40
    Sewerage is ~$140
    Drainage is ~20

  • Good work, if I lived by myself, I think I would be slightly higher but not much more than you.

Our last bill, we used 420L a day for our family including 2 toddlers which I think is pretty good as we also have a garden that we water over summer.

Luckily our toilets are plumbed to the water tank so free water and also good for the environment. Usage charges was $150.

The only reason why your bill is so cheap is that it sounds like you are renting and/or don't pay the fixed service charge.

Very disappointingly, our fixed service charges are more than our usage charges, so there's not much incentive to save water.

Family of 6 - bill was $239.99 and we averaged 949L per day.
Use very little on the garden - mostly comes from bore.
Dang kids washing and using the toilet!

  • Be careful with comparing cash amounts of water bills. The rates vary according to where you are. The cost is quite variable and for strange reasons. A country town we lived in in Victoria was the cheapest. About 10 inches annual rainfall and the water came by channel from hundreds of Kms away and was treated to WHO standards. The next cheapest was Swan Hill on the Murray. Then we moved to NSW on the coast. We get more than 60 inches of rain a year and yet we pay far more for water than anywhere else we have lived. Maybe they're not smart enough to get it to consumers cheaply.
