PER - POP (Cabarete, Dominican Republic) or PER - MRU (Mauritius) Mid June

Hi

Trying to take a family of 5 on a break - I have a career break coming up.
Looking to travel somewhere from Perth. The 5 pax is the killer…. I am looking for a place with ocean sports (Surf/kite)…. and yes, Bali is like a Perth suburb, so not there. We want to take 4 weeks that includes the July school holidays - but flexible on dates. Say 17/6 to 16/7

Anyway, we have been scratching on flights and the best we can do is:
PER to POP - Etihad (PER -> JFK $1893 return + JFK -> POP Ret ($700) Jet Blue

PER - MRU - ~ $1600 Return.

Any ideas? It is kind of scary when you add it up for 5 pax (3 boys, aged 2,4,6)

Thx!

Dominican Republic would be great but it's going to be expensive and 30+ hours travel.. I don't think I could manage it with three kids under 6. If you did then you could easily go to Cuba etc. which would be great with the kids…

Mauritius isn't usually cheap to get to so the prices during holidays aren't too bad considering you can get a direct flight there… http://www.tripsta.com.au has $1454 for adults and $1163 for children with the direct flights on your dates.

Some cheaper options would be to get a cheap flight to Singapore/KUL with scoot/tiger/airasia and then book tickets from there. Just get decent insurance that covers missed connection which usually isn't too much extra and will be free for kids. The last insurance I had stated that I had to be scheduled to be at the airport I think 1 hour before check-in opened.

Cebu, Philippines - should be around $650 and some great resorts for kids and plenty of activities

Male, Maldives - $700-800 Will be more expensive once you're there but it's beautiful and can relax in paradise.

    • To add to Zappy's post, the Philippines would be great for surf and kite!

Check out Bulabog Beach on Boracay for kitesurfing, and for surfing you really can't beat Siargao Island (home to the famous Cloud 9).

Boracay has a lot to do, but it is fairly touristy (for Filipino standards). I personally enjoyed the place a lot - White Beach is really as white as you will hear about! Siargao on the other hand is relatively untouched, just surfers and backpackers so far, but a few resorts are opening up. A very chilled out place, not too scary traffic wise to jump on a scooter and explore on your own. If you have a decent amount of time, some day trips to Bucas Grande and Yo Ho Ho Lagoon would be great! Plus you can arrange drunken water buffalo rides, if that's your thing.

Boracay is easily accessible from either Manila or Cebu, and served by 2 airports - Caticlan just near the ferry terminal that can only take smaller turboprop aircraft (but much more convenient) or Kalibo which is around 60km away, and you'll have to get a van or bus or taxi transfer. It's an "exciting" drive.

Siargao only gets 1 flight a day from Cebu, but this is by far the easiest way of getting there.

(So yeah, after quite a bit of travel through SE Asia, the Philippines is becoming my favourite if you hadn't noticed..)

  • Thank you. This is very helpful!
