Gaming Headphone with Mic

Hi everyone

My son is turning 16 next week and he would really like some good headphones for gaming. He has suggested something like Monster but hates Beats. :S He would really like a mic too. Has anyone seen any great deals lately or can highly recommend anything? I am clueless. Can only afford around $100.00

Thanks in advance. :)

Monster and Beats used to have a partnership together… just saying.

Monster AFAIK didn't make any gaming headphones — they focus on making headphones that are targeted at music listening. The only gaming headphone they made was this in 2013 and the reviews are mediocre according to Amazon.

Gaming headphones are different from ordinary music headphones in that headphones usually have 2 seperate cords (one for audio & another for microphone) and may include a USB sound card to allow the headphones to be used via a USB connection. as well as providing a volume control and a mute button for disabling the mic.

Normal headsets have only 1 3.5mm cord and is configured as a 4-pin TRRS connector, computers do not have one so the mic is not usable on a PC.

The headsets also include some kind of sound enhancement software that lets you have virtual 7.1 surround sound and possibly some other kind of EQ enhancement that enhances gameplay sounds.

With gaming headsets the microphone is also attached to the earcups using a 'stalk' rather than being situated on the cable itself, this allows the mic to be positioned right in front of your face rather than being rubbed against your clothing.

As for recommendations have a look at this old thread

If it's for the computer try the Logitech G930, you usually can get it for around $100-$120 and it is totally worth it. Sound quality is good and mic quality is better than other "gaming headsets" I've tried (i.e. razer kraken). After having a wireless headset I won't ever go back, the ease of just getting up and walking away from your computer desk without having to worry is the best

I've got the lesser model, the G430 and it is great for gaming. Long cable with in-line controls and a USB adaptor which boosts sound to headset. Cost me $55. It is also very flexible meaning it won't break as easily in my opinion.
